sniffer dogs

a while back we had a close call with some dogs at victoria coach station.

the dog put its paw up on a friend of mine, and the police lady handler immediatly said 'have you got any cannabis on you'....

the fact she said cannabis straight away, and not 'drugs' or 'any thing you shouldnt', got us wondering....

are sniffer dogs trained to a specific drug, ie: coke dogs, weed dogs.

and also are dogs that are trained to smell explosives/gun powder different to drug dogs, or do they do eveything?

incidentaly, when we were in victoria cach station having just departed a bus, i was standing very close to the other person, so much so that our legs were nearly touching, the dog smelt some weed, but went to the wrong leg (ie not mine) so i was able to skip past, knowing that my friend had nothing.

lol.....i read an article in National Geographic about how different animals have amazing ability to learn words/language...this one guy taught his dog the names of 2000 different toys..and the dog was able to remember and fetch every single one of those 2000....so yeah don't discount them doggies, as they could be smarter than you or i.

Spot on, Boner. Anything more would be too confusing, can lead to fallible evidence and a good lawyer can get round it (like the scent of cocaine on bank notes, many a rich criminal with a good lawyer has gotten away with that, to the point where it's now not allowed as forensic evidence). I know a bit about dog training, they tend to keep dogs on the same scent, it can be changed but it requires fairly strict retraining, again it's the weight of evidence, they need to prove the dog was sure, even if they find a stash of whatever - crazy legal system in place in the UK.

Dogs are top notch though, if they knew what they were doing they wouldn't be helping the sunday shoppers, I'm quite sure

If any1 watched a programme called send in the dogs on television a few weeks back (It was a series on ITV). The Dogs are trained to sniff more than one substance.
Dogs are tested with many different substances every week and can even smell if an empty tin has had drugs in.
Beware of the dogs they will get ya!!

Dogs are tested with many different substances every week and can even smell if an empty tin has had drugs in.

I didn't say they weren't trained to sniff more than one substance, what I meant was that they keep the dogs on the same scent for a good while - if they're using a dog for a suspected big job they will make sure and take the dog who's been on that scent the longest as lawyers have done a great job of making small on the evidence if the dog's ability is questioned. I know this 'cause I was shagging a police dog trainer a while back no jokes please... she was cool, not down with the chaining of the tropical tree!!

Dogs do have amazing noses though, absolutely amazing!!

But the dogs being able to smell is not evidence. The evidence is what the officers find, the dog is just there to indicate the substance. If the officers find nothing then you are not going to get nicked as there is no evidence. If the officers find something then, whether the dog sniffed it or not does not matter as they have the evidence.
As i said b4 the dogs are constatly praticing with different scents all the time so they are never on the same scent. A drugs dog is a drugs dog a sniffs all current illegal substances, A bomb dog sniffs bombs and a gun dog sniff guns. So of course you are going to take a drug dog on a drug raid or down the local pub, train station, school and on busses to find any drugs.

Like I've said before I've carried ounces through Schiphol on me before (I always bring something back every trip) and have had the dog walk straight past me, I was carrying it wrapped it clingfilm (about half a roll mind) so i personally think that dog was trained to smell something other than mj, the way I look at it is they'd be pulling over loads of people in the Airport due to people being able to carry some for personal use.

You more than likely came accross a dog used for sniffing bombs. As i said a drugs dog smell drugs (All current illegal substances),and a bomb dog will smell bombs (Common substances used in bombs) Of course loads of people have got ganj at schipol airport so it would be pointless walking round with a drugs dog at schipol when weed is tolerated.
In the UK this is not the case as drugs are illegal so drug dogs are trained to sniff all illegal substances. You then have a different dog for guns and a different dog for bombs.
Unfortunetly i dont have the programme i watched recorded but it clearly shows UK officers hiding different types of drugs for a (1) dog to find. These drugs are all hidden at the same time and the dog goes round one after the other picking them out.
The programme was called SEND IN THE DOGS on ITV if i remember right so if you can locate it. Sit back enjoy then see if you have changed your mind.
What if Police raid a drug dealer selling everything possible. what they going to say. Oh go and get the MJ dog, then we will have the coke dog, then the smack dog, then the crack dog, amphet dog and so on.
You would need a bus.
You must have seen Police documentrys where drug dealers have been raided (There was one in plymouth on Nightwatch a few months back)
They take one dog who goes through the house and finds all the gear he has stashed in about 10mins. Not once does the copper stop and say here boy smell this bag and go find.
Suppose we will have to agree to disagree on this one until you see footage.

I saw part of an episode of that series... you're actually agreeing with me, it's getting lost in the symantics somewhere though. What I'm saying is, of course they can be trained to smell anything but generally they will keep a drugs dog a drugs dog and a gun dog a gun dog, d'ya get me?

Ahh right, hold on ... I see what you're saying. It's not common for one dog to be used for several scents in one scene. That much I know for certain. Maybe they do it, but generally speaking they keep the dog in [insert drug/guns/refugees here] mode...

I still see that lassie from time to time, if I see her (& remember) I'll see what she's saying to it, she's a police dog trainer, I trust her opinion. I'm maybe too quick to believe some people's bleetings, but when it's their job you sorta err on the side of them knowing what they're talking about

But yeh man ask her i am sure she will get my point as for refugee dogs do we have them? Coz they are crap and should be sacked
