Dutch authourities to enforce smoking ban

VWA finds that café owners ignore the smoking ban, and beginning Wednesday will fine all violators.

AMSTERDAM -- The Food and Consumer Product Safety Authourity (VWA) held a series of additional inspections at cafes and restaurants in Groningen and Tilburg. The authourity says most violations of the new smoking ban were made by cafe owners in these two cities.

In Groningen, three cafe owners were fined and twenty were warned. Seven entrepreneurs were cautioned in Tilburg.

The VWA says the smoking ban, which began on 1 July, is being ignored by 20 percent of cafe owners, and beginning on Wednesday their inspectors will be stricter.

Cafe owners will no longer be cautioned but will immediately be fined between EUR 300 and 2,400.

I imagine some of these brown cafes you see have been owned for generations by the same family, this must be heartbreaking for them especially with the general econnomy a bit shit at the moment.

these little shops have no room to have a additional room and what with no outdoor heating allowed and no terraces after midnight, its absurd.

Arf! That sucks! Then the shops will start being strict eventually... as for the moment i feel no difference since the ban is enforced (except the no leaving cigarette butts or packs on the table).

Anyhow, i doubt they'll make you open a J unless it stinks of baccy (how shameful to roll such a spliff anyways, get lighter gear) or if you have cigs on the table.
