I go solo most of the time and have not stayed in any hostels. You never have probs meeting people in CSs anyway as most stoners are friendly.
My preference is a nice bed in a hotel that has Wifi (Or apartment).
probably a crap reply to your original post but i thought i would give my opinion.
Enjoy :D

havent stayed at a hostel myself either..although i hear the flying pig and bulldog arent bad... i would say i hear more about the flying pig.

i would prefer a nice single apartment or studio for my stay so i could have time to just chill and enjoy myself. i too also agree you can meet many people other ways as well..

I usually go to Amsterdam alone and always end up hooking up with fellow stoners if thats what you want. I have stayed once at the flying pig a fair few years ago now and remember having my socks nicked, so hang on to them if you end up in a hostel. I completely agree with kermit and cheese a nice quite room or apartment really does the trick. You can pick up some good deals even as a solo traveller.

The camping huts at Zeeburg are cheap and there is always lots going on there!

I've not stayed at the Flying Pig but heard a few good things about the place and it cheap. Also heard a few bad things aboult it also, mainly on the issue of it being a little grotty at times and guests things going missing quite often (if they dont put them away in the lockers then no point complaining on review sites or there forum).

I've stayed at the Bulldog 4 times now, cheap and clean and a decent level of security.

I'd say Flying Pig slightly cheaper and for a more hostel feel and younger visitors. Or the Bulldog for a more spacious hotel feel and mixed ages.

Both have dorms if your on a tight budget.

I stayed solo at the Flying Pig and i give the place a thumbs up. i understand things go missing but were they in the lockers provided? just wondering bec i left with all the stuff i came with (except the gloves i lost in the RLD  ). just lock your things or take em with you. you can also get a private room, im sure it costs less than an apartment which is also a great idea, but it surely wont be as comfy. so if you can spend the E100 or so per night an apt is great, if not maybe the FP is the way to go. peace.

I have stayed at the Flying Pig and I am going to stay there again when I come back in Feb. Loads of cool people there. I stayed at the one Uptown. Really enjoyed that one. Right next to Vondelpark ad close to some good CS.

Thr Rookies, Vijaya, and Freeland have been good choices for me so far.

I can heartily recommend the Vijaya - cheap enough for an en-suite room and great location too. Nice and clean... oh, and the staff are friendly!

Have fun!
