How exactly permeating is the RLD? Is it concentrated within a few blocks of downtown or does it slowly fade into the scenery? In other words is there kinda like a "line drawn" ENTER here and you are in RLD and EXIT here you are leaving RLD?

The main RLD is pretty concentrated with 2 separate sections- the Sexyland area near the Old Church and Bulldog coffeeshops and along Oudezijds Achterburgwal and it's sidestreets roughly just West of Nieuwmarkt. A block away from the RLD looks like any other residential area of Amsterdam.
For a huge amount of info check
www.ignatzmice.com ...for starters read the RLD FAQ and take the RLD tour. There's also a very active discussion board there.

It's very easy to avoid, I'd say. There's no major tourist attractions there other than the district itself. If you go to the centrum map on this site you'll see from my description that the main RLD is small and concentrated.
A person could go to the major museums, Anne Frank House, Leidseplein, Rembrandtplein, Dam Square, Centraal Station, flower market, Waterlooplein flea market, Albert Cuyp street market, zoo, and take all the tram, bus, and metro routes and never be exposed to the main RLD. I'm not sure but the canal boat rides may go along the Achterburgwal canal giving a closeup of the main RLD street.
I think there's many more tourists trying to find the RLD and failing than tourists that stumble on the RLD mistakenly.

Thanks...
I've been looking for an article that I read in the early 00's (naughties), will keep looking.
Basically, it suggested that the RLD would be a focus of gentrification over the next two decades.
Part of the focus was/is? to take over Red Windows and C/S locations as their licences expired or were revoked.
One aspect had the Govt. closing all Red Windows, Brothels, and Coffee Shops in the RLD, basically forcing the owners to sell. Sort of backfired a short time ago.
Several restoration project$ would turn the RLD into boutique$, B&B'$, hotel'$, restaurant$, and the like.
I'm not against it as long as the existing businesses aren't just forced out, a relocation plan should and must be addressed, if this actually were to happen.
But I highly doubt this would ever come to pass mainly because it would cost BIG money, not to mention having to deal with the NIMBY's (Not In My Back Yard).
I think the RLD won't be the same in 20yrs as it is today, most if not all prostitution shut down, maybe one or two brothels remain as museum show pieces.
If weed is still available, there may be a couple of shops in the area as well, again more as show pieces.
Just a few random thoughts, possibilities that I hope don't ever materialize, however change is inevitable.
Happy trails...

The RLD is located in the old part of Amsterdam and is worth a walk through, just do it early in the morning and you will see some great architecture, and don't miss the "Church in the attic" the "Old Church" with the closed Red light doors right across the church yard. It is one of my favorite early morning walks in Amsterdam. Go back after the sun sets and it is a different neighborhood.
