Haven't stayed here, but it's next door to the hotel we stayed in (The Quentin) .. It's a great area, very quiet & just round the corner from the Leidsplein so there's loads of good places to eat. The downside is that it's a 20 minute walk to the centre of Amsterdam, which mightn't sound too bad but if you feel like a lie down after a smoke I guarantee after three days you'll feel worn out walking back & forth, so I suggest you invest in a travel pass.

Hey my ears are burning.
the Kooyk is a great value, if you ask me. One of the lowest double prices you're gonna find for somewhere that's not a dump. Keep in mind that Jenny and I are easily satisfied and don't require much, nor expect much. Your mileage may vary.
You definitely want to request the ground floor room with the terras It is easily the biggest hotel room we've had in N. Europe, where rooms are always so small. Having said that, we don't know what the other rooms are like. Some TA comments say they are too small. I always take small room comments with a grain of salt.
The location, for us, was perfect. It takes all of 3 mins to walk the length of Leidsestraat to the Spui. Central Amsterdam is a state of mind
You may want to compare it to the Hotel Freeland around the corner. Prices were similar in 2007 and it was a toss up for us. I understand the Freeland is probably a little more "modernized". Also, then, the Hotel Asterisk which is close on the other side of Leidsesplein. Our buddy Scott stayed here. It's also a great choice, IMHO.
I don't imagine we'll ever stay anywhere other than an
apartmentin the future though.

Yeah if I'm going solo, a hostel or cheap hotel will suffice. With two or more people an apartment is the way to go.

I'm staying at Hotel Kooyk on July, has anyone been there recently? Is the breakfast ok? Is it smoker friendly? They don't allow indoor smoking, but I guess no one will notice if you're smoking next to an open window, there's also a balcony for those who smoke ciggs. It's pretty close to Dolphin and Leidsestraat, location seems to be pretty good. I don't mind staying straight at the centre. 30e/night for a single room doesn't seem too much to pay, including the breakfast. Add 10e and you get a wifi for your entire stay.
Help a noobie out

Any cool locations/shops/cheap restaurants near it?

I'll be staying at Kooyk for 3 nights starting this Friday. A mate I'm going with has been before and says the breakfasts are spot on. Have a little smoke before you go down and get some munchies going, well worth while for the price I've heard. Rooms only have a sink, shared toilet and shower facilities are down the hallway. Apparantly the hotel staff turn a blind eye if you want to blaze in the small garden area available.
Hope this helps, sounds good enough to me but I will let you know next week.

Hey, thanks for the info

I'll remain waiting to hear from your experiences in there. The breakfast was one of the reasons why I chose Kooyk, hope it's great.
Have fun in there!
