That's right i'm looking for a list, let's say #1-#5, of your favorite sites/hot spots to check out while in Amsterdam.
I've done some research and came up with a few on my own. But I've only been to the Dam on 1 occasion for only 23 hours. Smoked a shit ton and took some boomers. As you can imagine, i don't recall as much as i should
I am looking for different opinions on things to do outside of the great shops. Trust me I will spend plently of time in them. So that is why while out exploring I would enjoy to witness what this great city has to offer.

If the trips weren't so far and few between, i would just plop my arse in the shops the whole time. But that's not the case and i've got to show these newbie's some sites (myself included)!!

Some where on the list should be the 20 minute train ride to Haarlem. There are some great coffeeshops, a RLD, but with a more laid back small town ambiance. Well worth the few euro train fare. A few blocks north of the train station is Koffieshop Birdie. From there you can work your way south to WW Sensimilla catching a bunch of others along the way. For culture and history there are the Franz Halls museum and the Corrie Tenboom house.

When i go solo i spend all my time in CSs or walking/Tram between them and do very little sightseeing. So i will have to list our Favs that we do as a family.

The Vondelpark (If the weather is okay) or sarphatipark

A Boat trip (My kid loves them and you can get some good pics)

Cycling (Grab a bike and explore the City) Great fun especially with no map.

The Zoo (Another family fav when the weather is good)

As Flybynite said Haarlem (Explore and enjoy)

I found this list hard to compile as there is lots to do in Amsterdam apart from CSs but just not as enjoyable. IMO.
Myself i would just grab some weed jump on a tram spending a day whizzing round seeing the sights whilst getting wasted. Then you have the rest of the time to visit CSs.

i would really recommend you the heineken brewery, if youre into beer =) the beer is not the best, but the last time i´ve been there, i cost 10 € entry, that included 2 pints of heineken, and a present at the end of the tour (bottelopener). that´s not bad for 10 euro i think. and there are plenty of interactive things to do. pretty funny when stoned.

but it´s closed for renovation right now until the 3rd nov.

I'd also suggest getting lost, 4 of us done that on 1 trip. Not 1 of us could properly work out where we were on the map so prob why we got lost lol.

Spent at least 3 hours walking round the city not knowing where we were and seen all sorts of sights. Totally fooked when we did find where we were and got back to our hotel!. Well the others had decided to follow the road signs which to my conclusion cost us a good hour or more worth of walking. I rather enjoyed that and you cant get lost for to many hours without finding the will to use the trams surely?.

For a change of scene it would have to be Haarlem. If your spending more than a couple of nights in the city you surely want to have a look at the surrounding area?. And as only a 15-20 min train ride away is worth the several Euro return trip.

Historically I'd only suggest the Anne Frank House from experience. Even when stoned it's such an interesting place to walk around.

Fun day out, would have to be the zoo. But never yet made it myself. Only suggesting it as everyone I've spoke to or read about rates it as a great place to spend a few hours when having a joint.

Also the Ajax football stadium tour is great if your into the sport. But DONT have a joint before going in and think it's clever to walk into the top courner of the stand like I once did!. Kind of got the feeling that I could'nt stand up and it took me near 10 mins before I could make my way down lol. Also the Ajax tour is pretty cheap for about €8 as it also includes the museum which we spend at least an hour walking round looking at!.

Finally I'd also suggest getting to watch an Ajax match at the ground. You'd possably never guess how cheap it is compared to the British club games?. For about €8 (poss a little more now seeing as it was feb 07 I last went) you can get a standard seat that would cost you near 5 times that much back home!. The only issue with getting a match ticket is that you NEED your passport to obtain 1. Probably security reasons etc.

Just checked the Ajax website and tickets start from €7.75. But admitingly many tickets cost much more. But still far cheaper than back home in the UK!.

Same thing happened to me last time! I thought I knew Amsterdam... but the Big Buddha Cheese made me forget even where I was coming from...

Bike renting is always fun. Go to the Jordan district, which is really beautiful.

And don't forget to smoke...

This is outstanding information. I've always wanted to go to an Ajax game.

...a couple off the beaten pathway destinations- The Hollandsche Manege...would be anice choice for horsey folks...located just past the Vondelskerk on Vondelstraat...(or it can be reached via an alley from Overtoom ,near the Abba) an indoor riding rink,with a cafe overlooking . Enjoy a cuppa coffee etc. with the riding folks and watch a dressage team practice or a private lesson ,or w2hatever s going on ...wander thru the grounds and find the other rink,or zip around the corner to CS Tweedy . Then into the Park itself ...Most of you are familiar with the Albert Cuyp,if not put it high on your list ...but the Dapperstraat market near the Artis and Tropenmuseum is similar. With CS Happy People right at the foot ,and het Ballontje en route from the centrum ,if you walk...the Monday NoorderMarket is as busy a scene as we've found on a Monday (can even meet Channelite Tak at his gem/crystals booth there )

thanks guys, I really appreciate everyones imput. This will help make our trip much more enjoyable.. the trip is still 2+ months away but it sure is fun getting ready and I'm sure it'll be here before we know it!
