Alkmaar shuts down 92 red light windows
29 October 2008
The town of Alkmaar, some 30km north of Amsterdam, is closing 92 red light district windows operated by the same company because its owner is thought to have criminal connections.
In total, Alkmaar’s red light district has 125 windows where prostitutes ply their trade, news agency ANP reports.
Four out of five brothel owners were given licences to operate.
The company which lost is licence is to appeal. Under legislation known as the Bibob law, councils can shut down brothels and other businesses if they suspect that the owner has contacts with organised crime.
