Ok so i know it was a formality...but i think this will be the best thing to happen to the states for a very very long time.

As one who has voted for every Democratic candidate since Carter lost to Reagan in 1980 and all this trickle-down bullshit began, I have a message for the young people and newly empowered minorities who swept us into a new era as first-time voters:

You are the new Little Leaguer who steps to the plate for the first time and smashes a game-winning grand slam with your first swing, or the golfer who aces the very first hole he ever plays. As good as this feels, it will never, ever, be this good again. Just remain part of the process, do what you can to keep us moving the right direction, don't feel disenfranchised by all the foul balls off our toes for the last eight years -- and those coming in the future -- and keep swinging.

I have a firm philosophy that political power is generational and really only spans from the years you are aged 45 to 70. The old guard took an ass-kicking Tuesday from which it doesn't have time to recover before it starts dying en masse. That's harsh and real. As for me, I'm 47, and now we've won the 2006 mid-terms and swept 2008. For the first time in my life, someone younger than me (barely) will be president. We have a great man as president-elect, not just a great black man, and he appeals to younger Americans and younger baby-boomers alike, which is the vast expanse of our populace. God bless my wonderful parents, but their generation bled this country dry and it should be forgiven, but absolutely never forgotten, for allowing such faulty policies on its watch.

To hell with the old guard's ideas, but not to hell with them. It's our turn now. Get on, enjoy the ride and welcome to The New America.

at least i dont have to work anymore, obama is just going to spread the wealth. thanks to all you hard workers for making good money and letting the govt re-distribute! (tongue in cheek, or serious, you decide)

Yes, congratulations.
The USA has elected a black man into the White House- a great step forward, in my opinion. Something that I feel the UK is way behind in.
However, I hope that the fact he is black does not detract from his actions, and the effects that they will have on the American people, and the people of the World. Let us look beyond his colour now, and see what differences his actual policies make.
I look forward, with cautious optimism.

Despite my big-D Democratic leanings, I'm still an investment-class asshole who lost more than I care to admit in the last two months. If he can help get that money back, then redistribute at will!

I actually don't believe for a minute that he's going to raise taxes immediately. He's just going to let the Bush tax cuts expire. Then, we go back to the Clinton plan, and we all know how damned broke we were during those years, right?

I also am glad that people around the world are happy with us again. There is still alot of healing that needs to be done from the Bush error I mean era, but this is a start.

In response to a couple posts:

We young Americans have known the magnitude of the situation and are greatful to take part in the process. I also believe we understand and accept the ephemeral quality of the election. A truly once in a lifetime moment has come and gone and i hope everyone, no matter your political bias, realizes this and that we're at a turning point in America. I want Obama to do well for me, his people and his country. In 30 years i want to to say to my kids "I was there, I helped to do that. That day we made a difference." Good luck Obama i think youll need it.

As far as the 'race issue' goes, this isn't the end for America. Racial prejudice will go on black president or not. Not to down play the importance of this but i think now more than ever we need to stand up as a nation of one people and make sure we keep making progress. I dont think we can ever get rid of prejudice of many kinds but i do know we can stand up to those who wish to keep on hating and say "NO! Youre wrong. This country is better than that."

An amazing moment. An amzing night. Im still in shock i personally thought this wasnt the time for America. So glad to be proven wrong.

Congratulations America! I guess he’s bound to be a disappointment because nobody could live up to that hype but he’s got to be better than Bush hasn’t he? Anyway, happy Obama Day!
