Strong drink turns to diamonds
11th November, 2008
Tequila, the Mexican national drink, has been turned into diamonds.
Scientists in the country found that heated vapour from tequila blanco, when deposited on a stainless steel base, can form diamond films.
Synthetic diamonds from tequila, became possible because of the ideal compound of 40 percent ethanol and 60 percent water.
The synthetic diamonds are quite different to natural diamonds, which are produced by geological process from gases like methane.
The inventors of the application are seeking investors for their discovery, but have warned the crystals are too small to be used in jewellery.
They say the value of the diamonds will be in the detection of radiation, cutting tools or as a substitute for silicon in the computer chips of the future.
