A good friend of mine had heart palpitations and had to go to hospital after taking Pills and drinking a shit load of booze and smoking weed.
The depressant (weed, alcohol) slows your heart rate down and the stimulant (caffeine, ecstasy, nicotine) increases your heart rate and when taken together can cause your heart to beat erratically and when stoned can make you paranoid, which was probably the caused the anxiety.
All i can say to you is stick to the more indica dominant strains and take it easy with them.
Don't want to sound like a nanny, but I'd just like to correct something here
Alcohol is a Depressant, Marijuana is neither a depressant nor a stimulant, it actually has the effect of balancing your system, so it is working in harmony.
Marijuana (Sativa) introduces the body into a relaxed state of total awareness, by combining the two effects of both a Stimulant and and Relaxant. It causes you to breathe slower and deeper, bringing the body into a relaxation mode. This has the direct effect of increasing the amount of oxygen in the blood per mg. This results in your muscles being fed with better quality blood. This increases the stimulation of your brain, allow for more information to be picked up for your senses. The heightened sense of perception you get when stoned, audibly, visually and mentally, are not actually 'high', they are merely your body functioning as it should
As you relax, your arteries and veins also relax, meaning they widen, and allow more blood to flow, easing any restrictions to the blood flow. This causes a drop in blood pressure, which is why it should never be taken with blood thinning tables. If you cut yourself, you'd probably bleed to death.
On the stimulant side of the reaction, your body is put into a state of alertness. Your heart rate is raised slightly and your body is ready for immediate action, as in the fight or flight mode, but because you are relaxed, there is no muscle tension, and no unbalanced chemical reaction, you do not tire or become stressed by these elements.
All in all, your body performs at it's optimum level when you are 'high'. That's why you will always get high off a spliff. Your body always performs as it should do. smoking more than a spliff every four hours, is that moving you above the natural state into further levels of high, which then cause sensory overloads, as your senses begin to work on a level above that which we humans currently operate on.
May I recommend -

as a very good read on the Medicinal and Scientific resource, as well as a spiritual one, on this wonderful plant. It is a book, you have to buy it, but I have learned so much truth from this book. I can verify it with my own personal experiences, so that makes it the truth to me.
Read it, go on, you know you want to.

I stand corrected

i suppose you could say it is a hallucinogen or perturbator?

Again I'd have to say no, but then I may not be entirely correct, there's always more to learn!!
It's not a Hallucigen, because this causes an alteration of the way the mind works, an altered state, but is done through rewiring the brain. All marijuana does is balance the brain, and make it operate as it should, by increasing the quantity and quality of oxygenated blood. This is not altering anything, just making something operate as it should.
Again it's not a perturbator as this means to disquiet or agitate the mind, but Marijuana calms the mind. It is through the calming of the mind, that the issues you have are brought to the surface for you to examine and deal with. Our everyday too busy lifestyles, and depressants like alcohol, never gives us a chance to think. This works in two ways, we never look inside ourselves to resolve our problems, and we never get time to question what is happening in our life's.
Marijuana does both these things, and makes people think about everything, because your brain steps out of it's stupor and starts doing what it's best at - thinking. That's one of the many reasons it is kept illegal. Can't have too many thinkers, people would actually question everything, and the world would become a better place, and people don't want that.

Wow this is so weird. I smoke because of my heart rate being so high and the dr's have no clue as to why. They just scratch their heads, tell me I'm "wired differently" and call me a "medical anomaly" because even though my heart rate is high (128 resting), I have low blood pressure so I can't do beta blockers. Usually people with my problem have high blood pressure.
If I don't smoke, I don't get a signal to my brain that tells me I'm hungry because it's like my body is working out constantly (if you've ever worked out you know you're not hungry and don't even think about food until your heart rate comes back down), also I don't touch caffeine and watch my sugar intake. So this has literally saved my life in many ways. I have arthritis from being a gymnast and it helps with that also because I hate taking pills. Indicas are best for making me eat, I've found, however I really love the high of the sativas. They make me feel soooooooo good. I have also noticed it makes a HUGE difference with alcohol when it comes to your heart. I almost never drink alcohol either, maybe a glass or two of something a year if my heart is ok.
THC does lower blood sugar, but it gives you the munchies, so it brings it right back up. It's the perfect medication and all natural... just doesn't get any better.

IG, I have searched high and low for information about how smoking cannabis affects blood sugar levels but to no avail. Is this what you have found to be true for yourself or do you have a source of info about this or both?
I have a friend that has constant pain in her legs and I have recommended trying cannabis to relieve the pain(She has never ingested cannabis before) but then there is the problem of low blood sugar which she is afraid the mj might affect. I have not pushed it cause I just dont know how mj would affect blood sugar levels. Any more info that you could provide about this, islandgirl, would be
much appreciated. Thank you. Peace.

Here you go, Puffin. I thought for sure I had read an article on it either in WebMD or another site, but I found this one. They talk about the blood sugar at the bottom of the page. Hope this helps; you're such a nice, helpful person yourself.

Classification
Main article: Effects of cannabis#Psychoactive effects
While many drugs clearly fall into the category of either stimulant, depressant, hallucinogen, or antipsychotic, cannabis, containing both THC and CBD, exhibits a mix of all properties, leaning towards hallucinogen properties due to THC being the primary constituent.
According to good old wikipedia, don't know how true the source is.

Thank you, IG! The link you provided confirmed some of what I had already read. I had read
this article but was looking for something more.
I also just found
THIS over at Grass City. Seems like a lot of info there. Thanks again, IG. I will continue searching.

Thanks for your response too NYCBud. Much appreciated! Peace.

This is only going to increase anxiety. Mellow out, focus on the moment and enjoy. Smoking should be a pleasure not something to force yourself into. If your not enjoying it, drop it for a couple of weeks and see how you feel.
