I stay at Youth Hostel meeting point on Warmoestraat. rooms cost 14€ a night weeknights and €22 a night at weekends. They don't allow smoking in the rooms, but do have a seperate smoking room downstairs, just off the bar. It is not the biggest, and the place has lost some of the atmosphere because of it, but you can smoke in there, and the bar is reasonably priced if you're a drinker.

I managed to get a private room in a hostel near the Van Gogh museum for €25 a night. Inner Amsterdam i think its called.

Quite a walk from the Centrum mind but I like a nice mellow walk late in the night!

Depends on how much time you have. Are you fit? The train is less then 4 Euro.
4euro each way? that sounds good. is the train far from the airport? also how close does the train get to the dam square?
How many questions can you ask?? :(
The train runs FROM the airport! As I said in the previous post!

There are trains that leave from the airport and take your straight to Amsterdam Centraal. This is the best and probably only option besides hiring a cab which is obviously going to be more than 4 Euro.

Walking from the airport to Centraal is not really an option...its not close.

14-22 Euro at Meeting Point? That seems pretty cheap. I usually stick to the Winston, but have been to the Bulldog and a couple other places and I think they cost a bit more than that. The Winston was $50ish this coming weekend (I can't be bothered to do the conversion, but I think thats like 30 Euro). May be more than normal because of the Cannibus Cup coming up, but I think that's about what I pay every time. May have to check out Meeting Point in the future. Warmoestraat is the best place to do a hostel IMO

High All,

When planning Amsterdam 4 days, Paris 4 days, Florence 3 nights and Rome for 5 nights, I found it to be overwhelming to plan the whole thing out, making sure all connections were taken care of. Now I have my air, hotels, Eurail passes, and connections to and from airports.

Now, finding out I could get from the airport to Centraal Station, adjacent to the Hotel Ibis, which is where I am staying for 6 bucks, rather than the $190 for a private car we are using. I am not going to drop that at this point, and it will be handy to have a private car to DaVinci Airport in Rome. I really wish travel agents would dig a little deeper. Then again after a 12 hour flight, maybe not haggling with trains is worth the extra change.

That brought me to you lucky folks living in the UK or elsewhere in Europe, complaining about a 4 hour bus ride to get to the DAM. You guys are so lucky that you can make that trip multiple times a year. For me this will be my first, and perhaps my only trip. My round trip air is 975...good deal from Kansas City, but not like a less-than 100 euro trip. Were I a single fellow, I would just move to Europe (if they would have me), as I have always thought about many places in Europe that are more Free than America from my studies and contact with others, and ahead of the curve progressively.

In any event, I am glad and blessed to be coming to Amsterdam at all, and I have no complaint. This whole European tour has been my dream for over 30 years, and I never thought the day would come. 12 hours on a plane (with tranqs from my doctor) is a small price to pay for my dream.

Of course I am just joking with my European friends. I hope those of you who will be there from Jan 4th 830 am till the 8th at about 4 pm will contact me. I am hoping to meet as many locals as I can and learn about Europe from Europeans and not tour guides. Also I feel better as an American coming to Europe with a less embarrassing President ( I will be wearing my Hope shirt by Shepard Fairey.

Mellow days to you all -dave :D [/i][/url]
