coffeshop music

Post by hensmaj »

to quote peter griffin
THIS REALLY GRINDS MY GEARS.

i've noticed on my last few trips, how poor the music policy is in some shops.
a lot of the time it seems really out of context with the shop decor.
siberie used to be my favorite hang out,but the last time i was in there, they were playing lily allen for fuck sake.
i like most decent music, but banging tecno or heavy metal at 10 in the morning, does'nt really make my smoking experience any better.

just an observation.
anyone else feel the same way,or am i just a grumpy old git

peace out
ine the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king

Have to say when I am toking I like to listen to either a bit of Reggae, some south american tribal shit or a bit of a low key rock like Elbow.

Although if I get really high I like some good old Muse man!! That stuff is really good man!

It is true. Most CSs do not have a musical concept.

I would be glad if I would find a shop, where the music has more importance.

Yup...gotta agree...i never found anywhere playing laid back ambient sounds ...the best were the places playing an eclectic mix, such as Picasso,Paradox and La Tertulia, who won out simply by playing "Who do you love?" by Quicksilver Messanger Service in amongst some far out jazz and Dub... 8)

and De Kuil play some great music, especially if your a Zappa fan, which i most definitely am...BUT THEY DONT PLAY IT FUCKIN' LOUD ENOUGH...

As long as it isn't dance music I'll listen to anything, I usually just zone out and people watch when I'm in coffeeshops.

I listen to anything and everything. I love music. The funny thing is, when you break down the dance music into the chords and sections, they are exactly like rock records, exactly like jazz and every over style of music. The only difference between the styles is the way it's played. The music is the same. Same notes :)

I've always been into music, indie and rock as a kid, then growing up with the rave scene, the explosion of drum n' bass and the house club scene. Then got heavily into more arty stuff, classic blues and jazz, as well as the old rock classics, like Led Zep etc. I just love music :)

I don't say I like every song out there, but there isn't a style of music I will never listen to, although country almost makes it into that category, lol.

First...Question to Darkglobe. Is De Kull a CS? I could bake and listen to Frank and the Mothers for a week, ha.

I understand the feeling lots of you have. I've never been a Metal guy to begin with, but even more, when I high it is more of a sonic assault than something to chill into.

Ideally for me would be BeBop and Bassa Nova Jazz. Charlie Parker, Coltrane, of course the great Django Reinhardt, and other Jazz greats. Then, Id add some 60s acid rock of the more low key variety, then 70s art rock like ELP, Yes and Roxy Music. moving thru some R&B (meaning funk mostly) into early new wave, then college rock, wrapping up with bands like Ween, Weezer, Elvis Costello and of course Beck.

That's how I would do it...I also forgot to throw in the Talking Heads and the Smiths...but I would so love to create a playlist for a CS...cool topic!

Vive la differance

Post by child »

Yeah I had the same thought when I was ther for my short stint. The music seemed out-of-joint (pardon the pun).

As for all music being the same, I respectfully disagree--notes and progressions do not music make. The tonality and atmosphere within a genre are important distinctions. One cannot say that Rave/techno is identical with the Grateful Dead's. Both have their merits, but there are different times for each.

Yeah,me tooo... 8)

Yes ,DeKuil or 420 or FZ as it once was ,and then they only played Zappa,(with occasionaly sme Beefheart, natch),now they play a Frank song every other track...Allman bros, deep purple,ac/dc etc in between.
My only complaint is that the music isnt quite loud enough...
But A must visit CS...especially for a ZappaFreak...

DeKuli is where we have our meet up every 4/20.
They have a Volcano and I love their music.
Am also a big music lover, more into jazz and blues, but there isn't much I don't like, except maybe......???
Guess it depends on the time of day and the level it is played at.
The words also have a lot to do with it. Am opposed to music that degrades woman, or any other gender or race, but am not here to argue with anyone, just to say that I have very eclectic tastes in music.
From classical to world beat to electronic to Celtic folk music etc. etc.
Have over 5000 songs on my ipod and collection continues to grow.
Old School and Proud of It.

I guess what my musical taste can be defined as any style as long as it is artistic and well done. I definitely can see less jazz and adding world music to my list. I have a somewhat different taste in music when Im stoned, a little more atmospheric and melodic, but it's all in where you want it to take you.

Jazz is like sativa to me, it is music that makes you feel very up and alive. Frank Zappa fans will easily understand how a Jazz fan and a Zappa freak are pretty much the same. I will definitely have to check out dekuli...dekull?

Maybe I should make a top 20 CS playlist thread, or something similar.

Ive been to a fair few CS's now and also found that the music was terrible in most places, a bit of reggae or jazz is a rarity but i heard abit which was releiving.
on my recent visit i went to the kadinsky pub over the road from the CS for the first time and was actually really impressed, went from jazz to electronica/experimental/chillout. if youre into your bonobo/amon tobin sort of stuff then its definately for you, definately the only place where ive found decent tunes
