Hello! It was great to find the coffeeshopdirect.com website and this forum.
Although a long ways off, I plan on being in Amsterdam the first week of October, 2009 for a 7 day stay. Want to do plenty of research on hotels, trams/trains, bicycle rentals, museums/sights, and of course coffee shops.
Great being here, and looking forward to learning lots! Thanks to the mods for this forum; invaluable.

Welcome to the forum.
When you have firm dates for your trip, let me know. I'll post you on the Whos In Town page.
A very good primer on Amsterdam is S G Collins
How not to get hit by a bike and other stuff they forgot to tell you about Amsterdam.
Enjoy

Thanks BigRigBob.
Although the trip is many months away (October, '09), I'm enjoying exploring the forum, especially leaning which hotels are crap and which aren't. Leaning towards The Corner House

Hello and welcome. The corner house is in a great location for starting the day, its very near homegrown fantasy, grey area, resin and others.

I've pretty much decided on staying here based on the posts in this forum and the friendly atmosphere described at The House. Thanks to all posters who reviewed/reccommneded it.
I can recommend the Bulldog Hotel / Hostel

I don't know the Corner House. I've stayed at the Bulldog 3x and am going back there February. I like it, they have clean dorms of 8-12 people at about E30 per nite. That's about the cheapest I've found, and it's CLEAN and well managed. The staff is super and friendly(mostly), just be mindful of all the menstrual cycles present as there are lots of women on staff. Don't get me wrong, they're all cool, but a cycle is a cycle and the poor dears sometimes LOSE it, but I digress.
It's very centrally located (RLD, Oudezijds Voorburgwal 220) and anything you may desire is very near at hand, easy walks. There's a sroomery on one side and a coffeeshop on the other. I score my consumables elsewhere, but it's good to have them handy now and then for supplementation

The lobby and bar are super smoker friendly, but you have to be a guest. I think this is essentially a PRO because you have a semi restricted 'haven' from which to operate your Dam adventures. There is no smoking in the rooms, but there's a large roof terrace in addition to the aforementioned lobby/bar. I have read some negative reviews on Tripadvisor, but most of them were for the apartments up Oudezijs Voorburgwal. I travel alone, but if there are a number in your party, they have rooms for 2-6 people. There's 1 room right off the terrace for 4 or 6 people that is awesome.
What are some of the experiences you want to have in Amsterdam?

I am happy to share what experience's I've had to date.

Welcome.
A long way off, but at least it will give you time to research before you go.

Thank you very much for the suggestion for the suggestion of the Bulldog Hotel. I'm a bit fortunate in that my budget will allow me to stay the week at the Corner House. This is my first European vacation (and my first vacation in over 10 years!), so I'm going with the best I can afford. Not to disparage the Bulldog, just looking for something a bit different.
What do I want to experience in the Dam? Besides the coffeeshops:
1. Museums, exp. Van Gough.
2. Architecture & history.
3. The engineering marvels that hold back the sea and allow the Dam to exist.
4. Local food/cuisine.
5. Maybe take a train to some rural/country location or town for a day trip.
6. (Did I mention the coffeeshops?)
Appreciate any and all suggestions and comments.

Thanks. Already feel very welcome here.
I like to learn as much as possible about a place before I arrive. Am especially interested in learning as much as possible about local customs/traditions and manners so I don't come off as the typical arrogant, ignorant American. Have already devoured the S G Collins "How Not To Get Hit By A Bike" (thanks FlyByNite!), and am keen to learn more.
