Welcome to the forum.

I have posted you on the March Whos In Town page.
You can see who else may be in town during your visit.

Have a great trip.

Remember, if you have a camera with you and always ask first,
take pictures of coffeeshop menus and email them to me.
I'll post it on the Coffeeshop Menus page.
Be sure to let me know how you want it credited.
I can put links either web or mailto in the credits.
If you want to remain completely unknown let me know.
I'll post it as Anon.

There are hotel and hostel room finder shops on Damrak, not right outside the station. There certainly are no people hanging around there offering rooms.

My friends booked an apartment when they came out to join me on the july trip. Read the trip report for the fun we had when that fell through trrying to find an apartment. They were in Dam for 2 nights, then 2 days. Up till 1.30am on night 1 sorting accomodation, then spent until about 2pm sorting out their second nights accomodation through these places. Most of them try and hawk you a million miles outside the town centre as well.

It really is not worth the hassle. Of course you might be lucky and get a room for all nights at the most amazingly cheap price, but I certainly wouldn't bank on it.

Hostelworld.com or Hostelbookers.com are both great sites for booking hostels.

I personally book the Youth Hostel Meeting Point through Hostelworld.com Current prices for winter are €14 p.p.p.n during the week, and €18 p.p.p.n on weekends. It is a 2 minute walk from the train station on Warmoestraat.

It has a smoking room which shuts at 1am, when they close the front doors, and allow you to smoke in the bar like you used to be able to. The beer is among the cheapest in Amsterdam, €3.60 pint of Heineken, it really is a great place, and only 2 mins from red light district, all by foot.

I can't recommend the place highly enough, but it books up early so you always take a risk by just turning up.

The VVV (tourist info) right outside the station can get you accommodations I believe. I've used the VVV inside the airport for my tram passes.
