I have decided in earnest to make my way in life, and feel that the best move for me is to do this from The Netherlands.

I am still aware I have a lot to do and arrange, but I have started by applying for a job that very much interests me, the fact it is in Amsterdam is a bonus

Thought I'd post here and find out some information from you guys. Can anyone tell me how the tax situation works in Holland?

Let me be the first to implore you to recommend me for ANY job there once you get yourself settled.

Yeah the guy who wrote that (theguest @ Channels, nice guy from what I could tell during our very brief meeting a few years back in Haarlem) has been planning on moving over there for a good couple of years now.

Check out NL Planet (Haarlemshuffle), a web-site setup by some expats, now living in the Netherlands.

I found it to be a very useful website.

Since many of the members are originally from the UK, they would likely know both UK/Netherlands tax rules (or be able to let you know what to expect)

ive got a brilliant 'work your way around world' book and its got a whole section on amsterdam itself. i havent read into detail, just scanned over it, but it is very helpful information. im not ready to move myself yet so ive just been using it to help me plan my travels.
It tells you about opportunities in the dam, tax, job agencies, legal stuff, what you need to get a job that speaks english etc. its very good

Can I share a visualization trick that has always worked for me?:?:

I get a copy of the company's business card, from the person you're interviewing with. Then I white out their name, and I print over my name (insert you're name HERE ). Then I put the card somewhere I see it everyday and see it happening. Maybe it's a coincidence, but I've always gotten the jobs I needed with this.

OK, Stumbling block.

The job I have applied for is a 'Junior' role, as it is a slight change of career direction. This means 'junior' wages.

Now imagine my horror, when I discover that the cheapest apartment I can find is €1,100/m

That is more than my entire take home pay

The tax is pretty steep in Amsterdam - No lower earnings limit tax free like in the UK

* Part of the income from EUR 0 to EUR 17,319: 33.65 % of EUR 17,319 is EUR 5,827
* Part of the income from EUR 17,319 to EUR 31,122: 41.4 % of EUR 13,803 is EUR 5,714
* Part of the income from EUR 31,122 to EUR 53,064: 42 % of EUR 21,942 is EUR 9,215
* Above that: 52 %.

By my calculations I'll be taking home about €1050 a month. Can anyone help me out with some advice on where I can find cheaper places to rent, by at least half!!!

Actually scrap that, I won't be taking home that much because you have to pay for medical insurance out of your wages too..

Just found a perfect apartment for me in Haarlem, but it is still €745/m

Need to find out how my travelling in my job will affect my ability to get a second job, in a coffeeshop or something.
