Question about Absinthe

Where can one purchase quality absinthe in Amsterdam. I hear there are commercialized versions that have no or very litlte Thujone. I want to know were to get the best.

if its alcohol base liquids ur after and have the cash i would recomend the "off licence" on the corner of nieuwendijk and haringpakkerssteeg.

its a greatshop to fine that odd bottle of something! i get my green label JD from there and its the only place in europe ive found it!!

I would say they dont sell bottles, but if you want to try out some selfmade fruity absinthe (they said they did it with strawberry) for a good price (I think it was 2-3€) then I suggest you go to the Absinthe Bar, the atmosphere is chilled, the staff is very friendly and will take time to explain what kinds of Absinthe they have and what the difference is....every alcohol serving bar should have staff like this guy!

Thujone content I don't think makes much difference with absinthe, certainly doesn't make you trip.
What you want is something that louches well with water.
I think the stuff Marilyn Manson put his name on is awesome, not very expensive either.
La fee is ok as well and readily available.
I was not impressed by the availability of absinthe in Amsterdam or the way it was marketed.
Didn't visit this bar though.

I think it's all about the flavour, people who set it alight I also don't understand.

Absinthe and Jager are great herbal spirits.

I drink absinthe occasionally here and I will say the buzz is noticeably different than other alcohol. I had 4 drinks of absinthe one nite (absinthe + water) and found it enjoyable just to sit and stare, didn't really feel social at all. I also had a glass of wine, one beer and a shot of Crown Royal as well, but ate and drank lots of water before the absinthe.

Absinthe bar is the way to go Sh@dy couldntbe more right about the place. The review for the bar says theres no smoking and this may be the case now with the new laws but you could smoke weed in there 2 years ago. Check it out and have fun.

The price first, bottle for bottle norm = say £20 and green - £75!!! its more distilled!

oh and if u cant stretch that far try the single barrel for around £45!

Whats the difference between the Jack Daniels green label and the standard black label?

On a recent tour of the Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg Tenn. I was told of the differences. We were told that Jack Daniels has no particular amount of time that it is matured for. What actually takes place is that the Master Distiller will actually taste from 1 of the barrels and decides if it is ready. If the 1 is ready they assume the rest are ready without tasting them. The wharehouse where the mature Jack has probably about 17 levels that hold the barrels. The first 2 levels which stay the coolest since heat rises is where the Green Label comes from. Since this level does not get as hot the barrel does not expand and contract as much and therefore the liquor does not go into the pours and absorb the vanilla oak flavor from the barrel. Level 3 through through 15 are your standard black label and the upper levels are Single Barrel Jack. Gentleman Jack is black label Jack that is charcoal mellowed a second time before bottling.

Both are made from the same ingredients; the difference is determined by professional tasters, who determine which of the batches will be graded as worthy of being labeled with the prestigious black label, the rest being sold under the green label

and in case you dont look at the link just to state and clarify the are 6 different Jack Daniels labels. They are Green Label, Silver Select, Single Barrel, Gold Medal (Black Label), Master Jack and Gentleman's Jack.

I will never forget the night I done 3 Absinthes with the sugar cube dropped into and all that, the omly thing I remember is trying to roll a joint and then falling and pulling my mates venetian blinds off his window then vomiting on his front door step. That was my time with Absinthe.

That reminds me of my second absinthe experience:

My favourite DJ at the time was playing at a nightclub in Perth, so I took the train there and started the night off in a restaurant eating a large chewy bird called ostrich. This restaurant had some peculiar stuff on the menu, both food and drink, incluing absinthe.

So I sat at the bar and requested a shot - it was 70% alcohol. Downing it felt easier than tequila, in fact it was very smooth and left a warm numb feeling down my throat. I ordered another one, and was told that they are only allowed to sell 2 shots per customer.

I finished up and headed towards the nightclub, had a good time dancing to some tribal house, drinking numerous pints of lager and shaking the hand of my DJ Idol.

On my walk home, I was struggling to navigate and eventually realised that my B&B was along another road, directly parallel to the one I was walking along. In my abinthe fueled wisdom, I decided to climb a 4 metre high gate because I could see my B&B the other side. I got to the top, but something didnt feel right. I couldn't move. I looked around trying to work out why I couldn't move, when I noticed my hand had been impaled on a spike at the top of the gate

To my relief, a couple walked by and rescued me, called a taxi and sent me to hospital. I got stiched up, left with a scar like a crucifix. The absinthe not only numbed my throat, but my whole body!

I assume the club was the ice factory, but i'd love to know the identity of the DJ idol, being a big fan of the house/ prog "scene" myself....

Yeh man it was the ice factory with Fergie playing - I used to love his old hard house stuff when he first started, but was surprised to hear him playing tribal, it was good non the less

There's a shop on the corner of Nieuwendijk and Haringpakkerssteeg that sells all differant brands of Absinthe.
