If I'm not mistaken, one of the ways to tell if your plants are ready for harvest is when at least 75% of the pistils have turned color (usually to an amber/light brown color). If the trichs turn an amber color, now that's a different story. This means the glands & THC are beginning to degrade. I'm not a grower, so please correct me if I'm wrong. Pot n Peace.
sounds right to me puffin13...if you have a simple magnifying glass just look for the pistils to fill up as you said and at that point usually the trich caps will show a tiny mushroom...

I'll try and break it down quickly...

In general sativa's get you high, and and indica's get you stoned, but the harvest time makes a difference to the effect as well.

If you harvest when the Trichs are just cloudy, generally the pistils still white, the high of the weed is emphasised. If you harvest when the trichs are beginning to amber/all cloudy, pistils generally ambered by then, you will get a balance of high and stoned effects. If you wait until all the trichs have ambered you will experience an emphasized stone.
After all trichs have ambered you have about 2 weeks to harvest before degredation starts to set in.

If you are actually growing, you may want to look deeper into the explanation, but it should suffice to explain to non-growers. :)
