Greetings,
I am searching for a hotel to book for our June adventure. Can someone please tell me..as I am not that handy with a map...what part of town should we stay in considering the location of the cs's and museums?
I see Central...Jodaan..Amstel...and I am unsure. Course it maybe that things are close there...I do not know. I tend to judge things by the Texas territory in which I live..and everything is really spread out in my city.
Thank you,
Lexi~

Amsterdam isn't a very big city, if it's your first trip I'd stop in the Centrum area.

stop thinking texas and start thinking rhode island!!!
seriously though, the city is so compact and tight that you can literally walk anywhere if you are staying in any of the places you mentioned.
many people like de pijp area as you can hit the albert cuyp market, the heineken experience and of course several coffeeshops.
the joordan is nice and quiet (also having a market two days a week) but you are a bit of a way from any museums (save for anne frank)...
the amstel is very nice yet sometimes noisy up and down the canals at night.
up near vondel park or the leidseplein would put you very close to van gogh and rijksmuseum.
still the entire city is very user friendly, somewhat easily navigational and if you ever get tired, LET THE TRAMS BE YOUR FRIEND...

Thank you for this useful information. I shouldve asked another related question..I forgot..anyway..
We will be coming in on the train...but some friends will fly in. I understand that the train station is close to everything pretty much..what about the airport? Are the airport and the train stations close to one another..as in walking distance?
THANKS AGAIN!

no they are not.
have your friends take the short (20 minute) ride from AMS to Centraal and meet you there.

Yup good advice. I would recommend staying close to center (Dam) on your first trip or staying in Leidseplein.

plenty of trams at the top end of jordaan though & it's only about 15mins on the tram to the museums. There are also plenty of nice coffeeshops nearby, and it's a 15 min walk to brightly lit damrak, dam square, warmoestraat (which is loaded with coffeeshops)
Jordaan is very nice, very scenic, close to lots of good things, plenty of transport if you dont feel like walking (a mistake, because the dam is a lovely city to wander round) there are some nice little neighbourhood bars in Jordaan which do great food too.

Stay central then you can get everywhere. I normally stay out the city but had an apartment in the center this trip and it was much better.
enjoy

yeah, i suddenly felt a bit out the loop when i moved down to vondelpark for a day. Vondelpark is really nice & it was an easy walk to the reichsmuseum, but i prefer staying in centrum & jumping a tram out to the museums of park for the afternoon.
