Id have to disagree. While theres no doubt there is revenue tripping girls and weed, there is still many reasons to visit. The culture, the beauty, the arts along with a very interesting history still make it worth while to the majority of people that choose to visit. Cant forget that Holland in general is one of the worlds largest exporters with the worlds largest port to boot. Take away tourism and that country would do just fine.

Amsterdam is a nice city without the Weed and Girls with good culture but would i be as eager to make the 5 trips a year without knowing there is weed at the other end?
Myself NO
although i would look at making a single trip every other year with the family just to bring back memories.
(IMO) Amsterdam will lose mega bucks!!
Good post OceanVision should get some good opinions

i agree and believe amsterdam is a true gateway to most certainly all of western europe (at least for us americans) and for this am very grateful.geoffk wrote:I like culture, museums, etc.
still the cynical person in me sees these changes only further signs of the future
Donkey smell.
I am going back for my 4th time to Amsterdam. And even though the mushrooms are no longer available(although I did enjoy them in the past),it does not effect my decision to return at all. If I just wanted to trip and smoke good weed (which I also enjoy) I would just stay here in the U.S.
I am going back because I love the people, culture, architecture, pubs and overall vibe to the city. I have traveled quite a bit to many parts of this world and Amsterdam still ranks high on my personal top 10 great cities list.

I think people are missing the point.
regardless if u like to go to museum. amsterdam is still a place million of tourist goes to every year, .And the majority couldnt give a rat ass about anne frank or van goghe and if you removed all those museums amsterdam would loose some percent of the tourist. if u remove mushroom, weed and whores u will notice the majority is gone..
amsterdam is very beatifull and yada yada but remove weed and i tell u half of the tourist if not more would be gone. and thats the point .

Respectfully you couldnt be more wrong. Of the 3.5million or so people who visit Amsterdam each year 10% say coffeeshops are the reason for their visit, hardly a majority. Even if the 30% of Amsterdams visitors who would go to a coffeeshop stopped going there would still be a strong tourist industry there.ATWA wrote:I think people are missing the point.

Ive always said that the coffeeshop scene is a amazing thing to have about amsterdam but its a shame for if you visit and spend your whole time sitting in one. Some people would not come to amsterdam without the weed im sure your right, but they are probably the same people you would see gracing the gutters of ibiza at 6 in the morning expelling the contents of a bottle of vodka from their stomach, which dont get me wrong is quite fun. But i think alot of people go to amsterdam for the city itself, at least i do. I could have fun in amsterdam if there wasnt weed, i could go experience the nightlife which is very good amoungst other more cultural things.
Defeating evil with a thing called love
great post MH.. i must admit on my first trip over it was purely to experience amsterdam for its cannabis and coffeeshop culture.. while over there i was just amazed at the style of life and all the different things i was intrigued by. i didnt want to leave on the last day of my first trip (10 days) and as soon as i got home i started researching more and more of what amsterdam has to offer.. on my second visit i did less coffeeshopping and more amsterdam and really truly fell in love with the city.. just walking alongside a canal, watching boats and people go by, the absolute quiteness at 8 AM walking through town etc..by the third and fourth trips i was absolutely in love with what amsterdam had to offer me... i could go on just about walking around amsterdam, thats how i spend most of my trips.. just taking it all in..the museums and pubs and night clubs and all that is also an amazing bonus.. but i personally think amsterdam has the total package for me... amazing nightlife if your at the right places or doing what you like to do... it has some great variety of cannabis and especially hash.. tons of things to see as you walk from place to place... and some very interesting people to meet along the way. also it has some great music performances, amazing art exhibitions and the boat rides... i love crusing in a boat around town..milehigh wrote:Many come for the weed. Then the smart ones stay or return for the culture and attitude. Which one are you?
anyway i wont go on anymore.. but i personally will return to amsterdam without mushrooms with no hesitation.. mushrooms are mushrooms, i personally have done enough of them in my lifetime i could care less if i can trip during my vacation... its definetly not a make or break thing.. also if you really want to trip.. im sure if you were nice enough and asked around during your stay,. you would find someone willing to hook you up, just like in any other country you would be visiting.
1 downside i see to this whole mushroom thing is if i am gonna go through the hassle of having to find a random dude chopping shrooms, im gonna waste my time looking for something bigger and better... thats just my opinion...
cheers
' Smoke em if you got em '
My attitude might be different if I had visited Amsterdam when I was in my early 20s or late teens as opposed to my late 30s. Otherwise, I really don't care about the shrooms and I'm never wont for a great smoke. Still, I've always enjoyed the respective nature people seem to have for one another in the Nederlands. I love having a cup of coffee and spliff in a relaxed atmosphere and people or canal watching. I would miss that for sure.

You are probable right and if so that is great.
I wonder how many goes to amsterdam workrelated and then out of those who go just to travel, how many of them go for the weed.
Also is prostitution as "low" as the weed-tourist?
I would certainly classify myself as the type who goes to amsterdam for the experience, the culture and open minded people. the bikes etc and of course and almost most important, the ganja. But I dont consider myself so smart.milehigh wrote:Many come for the weed. Then the smart ones stay or return for the culture and attitude. Which one are you?
but i know many many friends who´s gone to amsterdam for one reason and that is weed and would never have gone or go back if cannabis/drugs were made illegal.
I just think there is many who would never go there if the weed"culture" died but obvious im wrong
now im lighting the peace pipe, u in?
