Tipping question (I've searched already)

I've already searched but haven't found clear examples. When do you tip? How much and who? I live in NYC and I have servers/waiters in my family, so I usually tip well if I'm happy. Can you guys list some examples such as coffeeshops, restaurants, hotel maids, and bars. Is it true you tip bouncers at clubs? What about the RLD? Thanks.

its not really the custom to tip in europe like in the states where you seem to tip every1. you will be ok leavin a tip after you evening meal in a restaraunt but anything else doent really need you to tip.. e.g coffee shops etc...

Agreed tipping is much more an American thing than Europe.

In England generally you would tip a restaurant or taxi and that's about it.

You wouldn't tip a member of Bar Staff although you could offer to buy them a drink.

As a general rule 10% in a restaruant and the same in a bar and coffeeshop coz most people in the service industry are on minimum wage and rely quite heavily on tips to boost there income and i find that you get a better service if you tip

hate to go all Mr Pink but I only tip if it was a nice meal/ good service. If it's crap they get nothing

Same as, I'm quite a generous tipper, but only if I feel it's warranted.

tip the taxi driver otherwise save your money and the embarrassment of trying to tip...

as above, an lets be fair, you are gonna get good and bad service in the dam. i've been in many restaurants where i've walked out an left zero...cos they desrved zero, most recently, an italian place at the very end of the spui opp. american book centre(had to throw in an anti-plug!). however, you will find yourself tipping every place you visit in haarlem. catch th drift?

If i am buying a coffee i just round up! ie 1.40 & let them keep the 10 cents change,But if i am eating out i allways leave a decent tip of like 5 euros or so! it all depends on what the bill is .

I always tip, but get told i tip too much, once every few drinks is fine. Dutch earn a decent wage so its more about the gesture than the amount, but I always tip generously

Yeah it's not the same as in the States where tips are expected. I always tip the cabbie especially if he helps with the bags at the airport. However last week I was out with a business collegue and he tried to tip 20GBP on his credit card for a 170GBP dinner bill and they had no idea how to add this to the total!

Sometimes I'll round up a euro on coffee or buds if the server was cool or if the budtender is really helpful and lets me take a peek at the buds.
