Re: Basjoe
If you needed to do a cartwheel through the door, stand on your head, then yell "Whoop Whoop!" to be allowed to buy one gram at Basjoes, USBL would say that it's supposed to be that way and you're an idiot for thinking otherwise.
Listing prices for 2 grams is for no other reason than to try and get unsuspecting tourists to spend twice as much. That's it. No other reason. If you think otherwise, you're just not getting it.
The restaurant menu analogy is perfect. Saying you'd ask for "half a steak" if you just weren't that hungry? GIVE ME A BREAK. How many times have you actually done that? Where does it end? A quarter order of fries? 75% of a soda? 2/3rds of a slice of pie? I have never heard of any such thing here in the USA. Maybe it's common across the pond, but I highly doubt it.
People need to stop sticking up for Basjoes as if they could do no wrong, especially now that it's changed hands and James is no longer in the building.
When this happened elsewhere (was it Old Church?) people on this forum in the review thread went nuts about it. But Basjoe does it? It's fine, no problems, you're stupid for not knowing to ask for less.

Dude, wake up on the wrong side or what? Hating hard because of a menu or a comment in their defense? Wow...ZBeebs wrote:If you needed to do a cartwheel through the door, stand on your head, then yell "Whoop Whoop!" to be allowed to buy one gram at Basjoes, USBL would say that it's supposed to be that way and you're an idiot for thinking otherwise.

In the overall picture, does it really matter how they list their gear? How many shops list 1.8gms, 3.6gms, etc... to sell gear at a rounded price? So what?
So what if it is a sales gimmick? You know this, I know this, probably most seasoned stoners know this - so fucking what? Really, so what?
The restaurant analogy is useless in this context. True, I wouldn't order 1/2 of a steak, but in a coffee shop I will/do order 1/2gms depending on my mood, or financial situation. Analogy fail. If a shop won't sell me gear in fractions of a gram - 0.5 increments, then I will go to one that will. Simply too easy without ANY fuss. With this in mind, and touching from something I mentioned above, why aren't people hating on shops that list quantities like 0.8, 1.6, etc...? This I thought was stupid at one time, for a moment, then I moved on...
... and finally there's this little tidbit - ..."you're stupid for not knowing to ask for less."
Arguably the only thing that is possibly stupid is getting all worked up about a menu, regardless of the shop or it's owner.

Re: Basjoe
I really don't want to be polemic as there are much more important things in the life to do polemic on, but all the shops apart from paradox and de graal I think list their gear as gram but if you ask they do also half gramZBeebs wrote:If you needed to do a cartwheel through the door, stand on your head, then yell "Whoop Whoop!" to be allowed to buy one gram at Basjoes, USBL would say that it's supposed to be that way and you're an idiot for thinking otherwise.

Re: Basjoe
My first and probably my only visit to Amsterdam last September was great and Basjoe was my favorite shop because James was the nicest, made us feel the most welcome and treated us really kindly. We spent a week in the Dam, I visited lots of shops, I kept returning to Basjoe because the weed and hash were good but also James was just a really unique person, and I felt right at home at his shop. We spent the hell out of cash on weed and hash in the dam and most shops might give you a lighter if you are lucky. James on two occasions gave me wonderful gifts for my birthday and for our last day in the dam which was a big tasty bud of weed and a really generous chunk of royal hash I think it was called but it was sure was nice of him and nobody in all of the dam at any shop treated us the way James did. I felt welcome and at ease there. I am so glad I gave James big hugs before we left and I have my photo with him that I will always treasure. I noticed some people talk about his nephew and to me he just seemed shy. He smiled and was friendly and was always cleaning and being busy when I was there. Seemed like a nice guy just quiet.
I have nothing but love for that shop and for James. Call me a fanboy... IDGAF.
I hope he is somewhere right now laughing his great laugh, and being happy. Peace and love to James always.

Re: Basjoe
I'm a bit surprised at the 2g price on the list as I would suspect this could put people off, not everyone is 'Coffeeshop wise' and would even think to negotiate.
Many people would find spending 20 to 25 Euros on one purchase too much and give it a miss, particularly when the quality of that purchase is uncertain, quite a few people have a limited budget these days.
Paying on average 12 or 13 Euros for 1g of green stuff around the centrum is enough of a layout to find the ones that are good, then buy bigger.
It's also nice to get the 10 Euro deals that some places do so you can try an affordable selection.
People tuning into this forum looking for advice and reading this Basjoe section will be visiting post-James and seeing it as it is now so it is only fair that they get a true impression of now and what to expect.
The good times over the years were then and have been great but the deal on the table is now as it is currently evolving.
There can be good times to look forward to here I'm sure, just needs getting used to and maybe the owners are trying things out to try and make it work for them - it is a business after all.
I will be testing out their patio in a few weeks for a toke and to watch the world go by if the weather holds up!
Good luck to them.

Re: Basjoe
Hahaha. I didnt mean to start a debate, and im glad someones corrected me in sayin that grams are available. But i think we can all agree that no matter what coffeeshop does this, its still a potential risk to their business intake? hypothetically if i was advertising that i only sell 10g, and everyone else sells 1g, realistaclly, who will have mote customers? i havent said that if you ask, less is available, im only advertising 10g's..so for the people that dont ask, look at the menu, see whats available, may not want to buy that much, then theyre fuckin off somewhere else...
Re: Basjoe
Which is exactly what I did in Basjoe's.Qemic wrote:...so for the people that dont ask, look at the menu, see whats available, may not want to buy that much, then theyre fuckin off somewhere else...
Hope the analogy is better.

Yep Qemic I agree.Qemic wrote:Hope the analogy is better.Qemic wrote:...so for the people that dont ask, look at the menu, see whats available, may not want to buy that much, then theyre fuckin off somewhere else...
Best to tempt us first with some bits of bait and then reel us in for a bigger sales of the ones we like.
Makes sound commercial sense.
Not everyone going into a coffeeshop is fully compus-mentus or conversant with the language to negotiate anyway
Cheers,
