NEED ADVICE

Post by squiggy »

As I've said on another post, I'm going to A'dam for the 1st time later this month, solo. It's a birthday pressie 2 myself :D :D . I've recently told a few people I'm going and I've had mixed opinions most say great but a couple have said because I'm female I shouldn't go on my own  . I'm not sure why :? . I would really appreciate some advice/opinions from experienced Dam travellers.

(IMO) You should be fine. I travel solo nearly all the time and find it easier to move round without people in tow. Of course i am a bloke so people will say its ok but i bet i get more weirdos comming up 2 me.
Its a safe city and the cops are never to far away just ensure you know where your going and how to get back and you will be okay.
You will meet plenty of people in CSs and maybe from this site.
At the end of the Day you will be in the Dam whilst the sceptic are at home slaving away.
Enjoy your trip and ignore the sceptics :D

full agree. its like any other big town in the world, stay away from dark corners, dont go too far from the centrum at night, always have a mobile phone with you....will be fine, nothing special.

Just remeber it's a city and like any other city there are some weirdo's about, the best advice I can give you is too just ignore anyone that starts a conversation with "pssssstt" these are the lowlife that will try to sell you drugs on the street but like Kermit said the Police are pretty much on the ball around those areas, enjoy your trip and enjoy your birthday.

I know other females who have traveled there on their own and did just fine. Just like boner said, be on your guard in any city. I am female and like to tavel with someone, usually my husband, but doesnt mean if the opportunity came up, I would go to the Dam by myself. I would feel very comfortable

I know a guy here who was gobsmacked when i told him i was walking about "Haarlemmerstraat" alone @ around 1.30/2 am in the morning 8),He says i am crazy & way back in 1992 you had junkies injecting down the little side alleys + street whores left right & centre,If its the truth or not is another story but that was his script 8).

Sure 10-15 years ago you would probably have been crazy to go out there on your own, but it is a very different amsterdam to the scene of a long time ago. The drugs have been cleaned up, so most of the trouble went away too.

I have even bumped into women travelling solo at my hostel before, There was rachel from america and shell from China, and they were both under 20 too.

If you're a sensible streetwise person, then don't sweat it, you'll be ok.

I've been to amsterdam solo, and there wasn't any problems. Just use good judgment and you'll be fine.Enjoy yourself, I do! The only thing thatever happened to me in the Dam was in the red- lite district .As I was walking down the street a little swarthy man came out of the shadows and said to me "can i help you?" I just kept on going and he melted back into the shadows from were he came.No problem, but if there had been trouble I would have yelled out ,And one of those big, burly men that keep an eye out on everyone .Would have cleaned his clock most likely! So travel! it's great! :D

I personaly make a point of not giving anything to the goblins! as my holiday spirit doesnt extend to them 8),& Yea i went (2 times) during 2008 myself & i agree the city centre has been cleaned up lots these last 4-5 years,Ie 90% of the junkies/dealers & beggars have been moved on or simply deported by the looks of things 8).
