Hi all

Im visiting Amsterdam on the 17th - 19th May for the Ghostface Gig at the Paradiso. Ive been to amsterdam 3 times before for short trips for Gigs JMT Non Phixion & a cancelled Rakim so as you can guess im a huge Hip hop fan and obviously Amsterdam loves Hip Hop so im looking for Coffee shops that play mostly Hip Hop as ive been in a few with general hip hop on but is there anywhere that plays alot of hip hop? also any bars or places of interest since fat beats closed down.

Cheers

Drew

I went to see JMT at the Melkweg in Feb, it was heavy, was you there??? I've also seem JMT in London (that was better than the Amsterdam gig)

And as for GFK coming to Dam in May, looks like im gonna have to book another trip for May :D :D :D

When we left the Melkweg Jedi Mind we found Rookies, which is only down the road and they were playing some good Hip Hop, and Green Place plays some good Hip Hop, i spose it depends on the budtenders choice at the time, but you can request music.....

I wouldnt say amsterdam loves hip hop....but if worse comes to worse find a nice little local place and pass a C.D to them and ask them to play a few tracks. However expect some dodegy looks if people like me are in there and hippdy hop starts blasting out....

exactly, if amsterdam loved hip hop it would be played everywhere non-stop. Just because the American tourists coming to spend their holidays there does not mean amsterdam loves hip hop. The whole point about amsterdam is that its a mix of scenes man, they have rock shows does that mean amsterdam loves rock? No it means that bands like to play in amsterdam because they can get stoned..... I would say the opposite to amsterdam loves hip hop, i would say amsterdam like most cities in europe in a rave city. The techno scene in amsterdam is much bigger than the hip hop scene, tbh thats how it is in europe, hip hop anit that big. We have a much bigger variety of music. Hip hop and a huge love for it up and down society is an american thing. Dont judge places by your own likes and dislikes.

I aint arguing its all it loves but you go to some cities and theres no hip hop scene there is obviously one im Amsterdam.

In a coffeeshop hiphop and reggae is my favorite choice. Some coffeeshop i went were playing really loud techno or rock and i cant stand it when i just want to chill.
and anyone who says hip hop aint big in europe are wrong, it is big!

American owned and commercial coffeeshops may cater the taste of tourists musically. I find that the music in the Rokerji 2 which plays some really chill eastern style music mixed with really chilled out almost Lemon Jelly- ish beats. Kashmir lounge has really chill music, heavy metal/rock are rare to find, mellow rock is easier to find. Hip hop and heavy metal are catered for by a smaller amount of coffeeshops, presumably because they are minority of people who prefer that type of music?

If its loud chance you dont fancy avoid 222 in the RLD.

This is how I see it as well 8) Amsterdam has a huge variety of music and subcultures. Hip-hop used to be bigger, but it still exists. Techno & Electro are kind of hot at the moment. House is still populair as well. Techno/Electro/House don't really have a subculture, but most of the people visiting those parties are sort of hipsters :P I can't really explain it but if you look at some pics at http://www.daskind.nl/pics.php you will know what I mean. And an example of one of the biggest techno parties in Amsterdam: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxMw8K-8PHs
The "Electro"-thing is everywhere hot in the moment (at least in europe), am an electronical DJ myself (although I still do it with vinyls, I only mix electronical music like house). Thinking about going to "Les Petit Pilous" when they are at Melkweg on 10th of April.
Do you know of any good electro-festivals this summer in the netherlands? we would love to go on one :)
