Virgin trip, early July

Hey everyone!
I'll try and keep this short, but I know I can't break it down all that much.
I've been thinking alot about going to Amsterdam the last year or so, but I never got around to it. Me and a friend finally sat down and decided to go during the better half of 2009. After weighing our options, we happened to remember some friends of ours mentioning Sensation White, which seemed like an easy way of getting more people to join us on a trip to Amsterdam. Long story short, we're gonna fly down there on the 1st of July, attend the first night of Sensation(3rd of july) and leave for home on the 4th or 5th. Leaving us with a couple of days to simply see what Amsterdam has to offer.
Obviously, since I'm posting here, Coffeeshops are gonna be a main attraction, and weed is one of the few things that I've always wanted to try, but never got around to. We haven't decided on a hotel yet, and I guess the only criteria is that we want to be able to find the Amsterdam Arena without too much trouble. We would also prefer a hotel that allows smoking in the rooms, or possibly has a balcony, as we'd ideally wanna bring weed to our rooms. If everything goes according to plan, we'll be smoking A LOT, seeing that this is one of the few times we can do it in an environment where we can choose between different stuff, and actually consult people with knowledge about the stuff.
So, simply put: Any recommendations when it comes to hotels, considering the above guidelines? Any special Coffeeshops where a bunch of noobs can/should start off(not too heavily crowded etc.)? And are there any Coffeeshops we should not miss for the world?
Like I mentioned above, none of us has smoked weed before, but we're all very eager to try it, and we'll spend the better part of our stay doing just that. We all want the glorious high that we see in movies, but I can hardly tell whether that's the way it goes down in reality or not. I am not familiar with the subtypes of the plants, so "families" of weed won't tell my much unless names are specified. I will read up some more on this, but I haven't gotten that far yet.
What do we smoke? What other types of highs are there, and how do we achieve them? How do we go about smoking the first few times(I've heard a lot of people don't even get high), to make sure we actually do it right? Although it's probably very individual; what can we expect from our first time?
I have smoked hash on a few occasions. It wasn't really all that special, but there's probably a load of things that screwed those nights up. Some of my friends even got sick. Is this to be expected with weed, as well? Just like drinking too much alcohol is a very real risk the first time you drink. So how much do we smoke, and how quickly do we know how to stop? And the big question: how should we smoke to get the most effective(or whatever word is better suited) high?
I've read so many contradictions about mushrooms that I don't know what to believe. Where does one go about getting these? What is the proper dosage? Are there any dangers involved(besides varying degrees of discomfort)? How long do you trip? Should this trip be mixed with weed?
I probably forgot something, and probably asked about stuff that I shouldn't have, but here's something for starters. I'll fill you in on where I'm staying when I find a hotel. I'm really psyched about this, and if all goes well, I expect to return some time during the fall/early winter.
All information is appreciated![/b]

For a Hotel that has a balcony and allows smoking try the Abba Hotel which is on Overtoon, nearest coffeeshop being Tweedy.

all your questions are answered in the "coffeeshops and cannabis" section of the forum... the truth is i'd love to answer your questions myself, but i'm typing this from my PSP and it takes forever.
ps: also check the travelogues... you'll find them useful.

How not to get hit by a bike and other stuff they forgot to tell you about Amsterdam.
Depending on the size of your group, you may want to look into renting an apartment or houseboat for your stay.

Head to MY it will be ideal for your needs. Get some bud and ask them to vape it for you. Share the bag between you and your m8s and this should sort you out.
Enjoy your trip

We've decided to stay at Mercure Amsterdam aan de Amstel. Partially because of price, and because of what type of rooms were available(still hoping to get the smoking rooms, as there was a checkbox for these). Looking at the ACD-map of what shops are where, I realize that this isn't exactly the most central place, but it doesen't look too bad. What/which would be the closest Smartshop(s) to the hotel? As displayed by the hotel website, the address is Joan Muyskenweg 10.
Map
Trolled around, and I feel that I know the very basic stuff. The only thing I haven't been able to figure out is how realistic are the chances of us actually getting hold of Magic Mushrooms? Should I just ask in Smartshops?

That hotel is a bit of a trek from the centre of Amsterdam (over an hour by foot to Dam square), haven't a clue what coffeeshops are down there.
Doesn't hurt to ask re: the mushies.

If you guys are inexperienced try telling this to the budtender, who will advise you to start on the milder strains.
It is better to take 3 or 4 tokes then leave it alone for 20 mins & have another go. if ya don't get any bad effects try some more but don't overdo it at first as it may induce a negative vibe for ya.
I would avoid the shrooms at all cost if ya haven't done these before as once the trip starts ya can't stop it (all they do for me is gimmee a little floatiness totally ruined by 4 hours solid throwing up

)
Please check out the ACD's c/s listings for a list of all the best shops, but whilst you will find lots of people on here telling you what they think are the best shops, I suppose its all down to what ya want in a coffee shop- the ambience, staff prices, etc .
Take a look and see what floats ya boat
have a great time

Hi there dude, popping your amsterdam cherry can be a bit of a daunting thing to consider. However i would remind you that the cannabis scene out there promotes alot of peace and tolerance, in fact if you tell people this is your first time smoking weed then they will probably be happy to keep an eye on you and sit and chat with you.
Shops- this is a big part of amsterdam to many people, what im going to suggest to you are not possibly the greatest shops in amsterdam but the ones in which you feel most relaxed in. In and around centrum i would have to say Rockerji near Rastababy is a nice open place with a good atomsphere. One of my personal faveourite places Picasso is also a very chilled place, smaller and more homely with cool tunes and board games upstairs. La Tutellia (sp) is run my a couple of ladies, and as such i think offers a uniqually mellow and inviting amsterdam coffeeshop. A contraversial suggestion of Cafe 420/De Kuil is up next, good menu, nice shop with happy helpful people. A bit further out is Tweed D' Karma again a small nice cosy shop with helpful staff and locals in my experience. Dolphins has a wonderful chill space down stairs with very cool sofas and finally Mellow Yellow, a happy mellow place with a very good menu. Another good shop ive only just remembered are Katsu and Basjoes
Weed Right, first of all its important to tell you, like with alchol you can smoke a little to much bud, and have a whitey. This is a lack of sugar causing someone to feel faint and messed up, it can also result in throwing up. Although this dosnt always happen. The best way to handle this issue is by having sugary drinks near you, such as coke or a looza or even a coffee with mass amounts of sugar in it and some food or munchies to power up on. When you smoke remember you are going to feel different usually more relaxed, the strain of cannabis that will get you feeling as if your stuck to your seat are known as Indicas and the strains which will make you energetic are known as Sativas.
For your first time i would reccomend outdoor weed, usually comes in the form of Jamican or Thai. Katsu does very good Thai as does a place called Yo-Yo which specializes in outdoor weed. Ask someone to roll you a joint, or buy a pipe, and put a small amount of weed in, pass it around your friends have one puff and put the joint down. This will mean you can see how the effects are buliding up without doing too much the first time. Wait 15-20 mins before you think of smoking again, then next time repeat the one puff pass around.
Hotels Not such a fan of hotels, so id point you in the direction of a houseboat or apartment, theres heaps of info on this forum about various apartments and houseboats.
Shrooms The information regarding these is indeed changing quite regularly, so the way i see it is this, Truffles are O.K other shrooms may be available under the counter at head shops. You have to ask and see where it gets you, however do not buy anything off the street. Dosage effects etc vary from mushroom to mushroom, some are strictly for experienced trippers, others are for the first paddle in the water of tripping. Ask the workers at the head shops, its their job to know and let you know what you are buying.
Never be afraid to ask for help in a coffeeshop, the staff are there to help you out. I hope you enjoy yourself.
Peace.

Thanks for informative answers, guys. Especially the two latter as they address just the kind of stuff I was wondering about. I guess it's much like drinking alcohol in terms of how it hits you, it's not instant, and it can be overdone, especially when your tolerance is low(which it probably is in the beginning). The outdoor weed idea really hits the spot, as a lot of experiences are more enjoyable outdoors, and it's comfortable with fresh air while you do something potentially nauseating.
We'll start off slow, for sure. No one wants to burn themselves on this, as that can really ruin a day, or good amounts of it. We were, however, hoping to try as much as possible, involving different strains, hash, shrooms, whatever. And with 4 days to do it, we gotta keep the train rolling to actually get stuff done. Not gonna rush, though, as that leads to unhappy times, but go from one place to the other, seeing what's there, and trying it out.
I'll ask the budtenders about getting the milder strains for starters.
About the shrooms/truffles. We gotta start somewhere, right? "Safe" hallucinogens are non-existent where I live. You'll have to get acid, which is not where we wanna go. It's the idea of psychedelics that enthralls me, and I really gotta try it, or I'll beat myself up about it. I've heard that trips go on for hours, and some people get sick from them(shrooms), but is it really that bad. Now, I see people getting sick from kebabs, or spend 14 hours sleeping the booze out of their system. I happen to have an insane metabolism(this is what my doctor says) which in the aforementioned cases seems to be what keeps me perfectly healthy where my friends sit on the toilet for the next 12 hours, and I get rid of my alcohol in about half the time that they do. I know most of you aren't doctors, but does this make a difference? Do the people that experience frequent throwing up after doing shrooms usually get the worst when there's stomach-related trouble about(bad food, too much fat/sugar etc.)?
I'm just asking this to give myself some, if false, certainty that I will be fine when doing shrooms. Maybe starting out real slow is the way to go? Or with a small dose to test my tolerance? I wouldn't know, but curiosity can't be helped. I was thinking about doing it in my hotel room, with some good music, food and drink nearby, and even some weed available, I've heard that it helps the stomach deal with the mushrooms for many people. How was your first time, guys?
This got long...
Last question: How do you recommend we go about trying out hash? I've tried some fancy methods in the past, but I was shitfaced, and wasn't really the one in control, so my knowledge is not great.
Thanks again, people!

Also, back to the outdoor thing, I'm not sure what the weather will be like. But there's shops that do indeed offer outdoor seating. I'm sure there's a few threads about that on here.

Yeah, I see that I got the outdoor thing slightly wrong, but it doesn't matter. The point is taken, and you addressed what I really thought you meant in your last post, anyhow. It's all good!
Taking things in moderation(to begin with) and we'll be fine, I think. Start out slow, and take it from there. Getting really psyched about this trip, can't help but counting the days. Gotta make myself a rough sketch to line out what things I definitely wanna do/smoke/see. I guess I gotta see the Heineken brewery, and stroll through the red light district.
I saw you mention Head shops earlier. Is this just a different name for "smartshop", or is it something different entirely?
I'll have to try some hash food, as well. Now that we're at it, are there any specific places we should go to get some brownies or whatever is the more common ways of baking/cooking with hash? How does this stuff treat you, the first time around? I've heard that some people get completely hammered, but it takes a while.
Thanks again!
