P.S. Any recommeneded Amsterdam travel guides? I've looked at a few but most don't even mention coffee shops. I'd like something that has every, coffeeshops, restaurants, places to visit etc etc etc etc.

Thanks a lot Flybynite. I've already checked out pretty much any online information source I can about Amsterdam and including the How not to get hit by a bicycle article. Very helpful :).

Now I just gotta count the days

Sounds good. Like I said I'm always down to meet good people...I'd really like to mingle with some of Amsterdam's frequent visitors as well as its residents to get the full experience of this country. I'm very interested in having a few conversations about people's true feelings on what its like to live in Amsterdam as well as the culture and society which it encapsules. I'm just very curious as to what its like outside of America, and what people's thoughts are who live outside of America.

I guess I just want to get the full experience. This is my first trip to Europe, let alone Amsterdam, and I'm VERY excited to get different perspectives on a different side of the world.

I don't want to let you down, but most of the people you will end up meeting will be American :) Seriously, there is almost never a time when there is not an american in a coffeeshop. OK, I am exagerating :) But Americans seem to find each other very easily in Amsterdam, so don't expect too much of a European view :)

Umm, cough cough. If you leave the binnenstad(centrum) you can get all the local you want. Come on out to the real Amsterdam Andy, love to show you more.

Well I definitely plan on spending time at the Centrum, but I don't plan on limiting myself to just that. I figure I have 4 days in the Dam, maybe spend 2 in the Centrum/West Canals/Jordaan area and then spend the other two in other areas of interest. I would definitely like to head down to De Pijp and check out the Albert Cuyp market. I would also like to check out the Leidseplein area and the Vodelpark area as well. So I'm hoping that if I can check out all these areas.. Or maybe these are simply tourist hotspots I'm describing and I'm an idiot..who knows lol

Either way I'm sure I'll have a great and interesting time. I'll be at the Hotel Internationaal so I'll be up by Central Station and so of course the Centrum will be right in my face to explore..but I'm hoping to have a decent amount of time to catch a few trams and experience as much of the Dam I can get in 4 days.

Most travel guides will not have too much on the coffeeshops. I suggest print the maps from this site, and have a Streetwise map.

As for travel guides I was happy with DK's Amsterdam Top 10. This book breaks the city into sections and gives 10 bars, resturants, sights, ect... in each area of the city. It came in real handy for finding good food.

Thanks I actually had this in hand at the bookstore the other day. I'm gonna have to go back and pick it up. If you say it lists good locations for food, then I'm sold lol.
