Hi, I am going around the world, leaving in a couple of months and one of my stops is Amsterdam for a couple of weeks. It is my first time there and I want to stay in a 3 or 4 star place, preferably. The area I am thinking is somewhere west or south-west of the red light district, about 10-15 minutes walk from it. I would like to be in an area that has lots of fun people and travellers that will be good for a solo traveller.
Other criteria include:
-Under 2000 euros for the two weeks (if possible I would like to pay a lot less), the exchange rate for my country means that 1 of my dollars is worth half a euro. This is the most expensive destination on my whole trip as I have family most other places I am going to on my global expedition.
-Somewhere with good hygiene standards
-Not too many stairs to climb up (if possible)
-A place that wouldn't kick you out for smoking pot in your room if somehow they knew (I would be discreet).
-Good chance of meeting young single females staying there and nearby, and cool travellers.
-Preferable serve breakfast at a reasonable price or even better, included in the price.
-Safe to purchase over the internet.
-Own bathroom
I have been researching for ages and I can't make up my mind because I don't want to make a mistake. I don't usually spend this amount of money in one go. I need to book soon as they will become booked out, please help.

i usually go really buget hotels so i cant give you much help on suggesting a 3* or 4* place but, i would suggest you dont need to worry about hotels booking out.
why not book a hotel for first couple of nights, you can extend your stay when are there, or if your not feeling that place, the government run tourist info points in and around central station will definatly find you a hotel, usually cheaper than on web sites.
half the trips ive taken, we've not booked a hotel untill we arrive. ive been peak time and off peak and never had a problem getting a selection to choose from.
i understand this probably isnt much help, but i hope it eases your mind when it comes to making a booking.

I'd suggest an apartment or houseboat, a lot allow smoking, some have a balcony or outside space.

If you're adamant on stopping in a hotel then I'd go with somewhere like the NH Krasnapolsky or any other top end 4/5* hotels that have a balcony.

as far as I know the Hotel Die Port Van Cleve would fit your criteria (except location, its right behind Dam Square on Nieuwejids Voorburgwal) It is 4 stars but the only question i would ask them is if they still allow smoking. Otherwise its great hotel, with very nice accommodations, pvt clean bathrooms, and free breakfast. There is also a really sweet hotel Bar and separate restaurant, i hope this helps you friend, and here's a link to the hotels site, safe trippin!, peace.

If it wasnt for the brits, ID BE DUTCH RIGHT NOW
For an extended stay such as yours, to be able to smoke in peace and enjoy 3 to 4 star accomodations I would highly recommend renting an apartment. The only hassle that might make it less desirable than a hotel would be getting it cleaned but most places can either arrange it for you or include the cost in the rental fee. I prefer an apartment for a longer stay so I can shop for food locally, etc. and get more of an idea of what life is like for a local. My first trip the Mrs and I rented a really nice place near Vondel Park that was perfect for our first time and equivalent to staying in a 3 or 4 star hotel. Just make sure to read the fine print to make sure smoking is allowed.
This might not be best for meeting other tourists and ladies where you stay but at least you will have your own space to invite new friends to come visit. I believe amsterdam escape is a preferred and suggested rental agency on this board as they cater to smokers and are rated highly on trip advisor. They were also recommended to me at some of the coffee shops near their apartments.
Enjoy your word wide adventure! I am quite jealous as traveling the globe in one trip is a dream of mine.
