Post by moose_knuckle »

Hey im off to the dam with some friends on the 18th of april and were staying at hotel vijaya, would anybody know of any nice coffe shops around this hotel that we can visit when we dont feel like trecking around. I know hill street blues is meant to be alright and quite near but ive heard some mixed things about it.

If you take a look at the coffeeshop map the hotel is situated in squares G3-4, most of what you see is easily walkable, lots of quality shops around like Central, Stix 2, De Kuil/420, Homegrown Fantasy & Basjoe, theres a lot of us there that weekend and theres a few meet ups happening on monday the 20th, check the Travel Plans section, finally enjoy your trip.

Thanks , ive checked out that map and have seen lots of places i want to try but i guess its just a bit hard to gauge walking/tram distance compared to where out hotel is on it. Plus i know that theres a few places that arnt on the map, like i think theres one called freeway or something quite near our place that i cant really find any feedback on.

He means Freeway. There are a lot of coffeeshops not on the map, for space and other reasons I guess. For example, the coffeeshop directly opposite my bedroom window is called Bushman. Its on the Oudenzijds Voorburgwal, and it is not on the map, but it defintely exists, lol.

That's the beauty of Amsterdam. Look carefully, Old Amsterdam iand Arabica lounge are in a different text. One of the guys on the forum here updated it a bit, but there are still many coffeeshops not there :)

Behind the Vijaya runs Warmoestraat, where you can't spit without hitting a coffeeshop. Baba, Greenhouse Effect, Hill Street Blues, Coffeeshop 36 and Hunters just to name a few.

That sounds good, so hows the hotel on smoking?, i made sure i asked for a smoking room so hopefully that means we'll be able to have a few joints in the room. Back here we normally get around 2 joints from a gram but im little curious about the avarage people are getting out of one in dam. Probably the same but i i thought i'd ask anyway.

I too have stayed many times at the hotel Vijaya - friendly staff, good breakfast, clean rooms etc...

The Old Church coffeeshop is within very easy staggering distance, and despite some sketchy reviews, I found it to be ok - just remember to buy a drink and some weed and you'll be fine! A few people have commented on how quick the staff are to point out their policy on buying stuff if you're stopping there, which for me has never been a problem.

To be honest though, there are plenty of even better places such as De Kuil (420) which are very close by and offer a nicer vibe.

As for smoking in the rooms, well, I think "officially" you're not supposed to smoke in any hotel in Amsterdam now, but there was an ashtray in my room when I was there last October, and the window opened easily out onto the canal view, so as long as you're discrete about it, I doubt you'll have any problems. Stick a towel across the bottom of the door, open the window... and if you're not sure, just ask them in the hotel - they're very nice people there.

Enjoy your trip - you'll probably find that most of the plans you make in advance will melt away once you get there anyway, so just go with the flow and have a blast!
