First trip to Amsterdam in 30 days - Help with coffeeshops

Post by njpsy »

Hello all -

Myself and 2 friend are taking our first trip to Amsterdam next month and they have put in me in charge of the task of selecting which CS to go to. Needless to say this is a very important task, and after spending a few hours working my way through this site, I have to say that I am in way over my head. I need some help.

We are staying right by the Amsterdam Central train station. I am looking for a few shops that fit the following criteria. Of course we would like all of them to be friendly to tourists, non-seedy locations and overall highly rated shops. Any help you can give in any of the areas would be greatly appreciated.

We have decided to split our CS trip into 3 categories: Award Winners, Laid Back, Social

Award Winners - Ideally these are places that have won cannabis cup or other such awards in recent years. We would love to try some top of the line, award winning strains.

Laid Back - Ideally these places would have a mellow feel to them. They don't get crowded with people, no techno is playing or anything of that nature. The ability to people watch would be great, but most importantly a small table that we could have to ourselves is required. Places that are more local spots and less touristy would be great.

Social - Ideally these places get busier towards night. They skew towards touristy places, or even flat out cater to them. They might play louder music, and might get a little crowded, but that is OK.

In addition, I would love to hear any and all suggestions that you may have. We are willing to consider everything from locations to strains to different atmospheres.

Thank you all in advance for all of your help!

Green Place falls into the laidback category with top bud of course.

For your Social experience I suggest pick up herb from any CS and head to Nes. It is a smoker friendly bar where you can have a spliff and a beer.
You can not
overdose on THC...

I've tried...

For laid back Hit Mellow yellow (ITS IN THE NAME)!

I have learnt over the years that cup winners dont always win cups from me. To clarify this, I mean i have tried many Cup winning strains and some just dont do it for me.

You will probably find the majority of cup winning shops will be the ones for your social categorie too.
My opinion only, others will differ.
Have a good trip and enjoy :D

Mellow Yellow for chillout&Cup winners, its a shop with many awards, and in contradiction to some other big chains, they dont seem to pay for their prices. they have a wide selection of hazes and some nice old-school strains and good hashes. they also have bongs, 2-3 vaporizers and the best hot chocolate in town :)

Dampkring is the place to hit for meeting many new people, although at MY you will find many different people from all over the world and in every age, but at Dampkring there are more people, crowded whenever you go there, they still sell some of the best weed in town for reasonable prices.
same goes for Blues Brothers, they do good weed and many people visit it because its in the very central.

Cup winners - I'd say Barneys, if you go to Barneys Lounge: https://www.coffeeshopdirect.com/Barney3.html you'll find it's a very mellow coffeeshop as well.

Social - Just stick to Warmoestraat and the RLD area these tend to get busier in the evening, if you want to combine social & mellow then theres no better place than 420/De Kuil: https://www.coffeeshopdirect.com/Kuil.html

If you fancy something really local during the day then I'd suggest Paradox: https://www.coffeeshopdirect.com/Paradox.html this for me is probably the best coffeeshop in Amsterdam, good weed, nice people and a lovely location (just come out the door turn left and you're on some of the prettiest canals in town).

Second whats been said by Boner. 420 is excellent for chilling during the day and socialising during the night, Paradox for being probably the best coffeeshop in Amsterdam.

For the touristy cofeeshops, go to the Greenhouse in the RLD. I dont like the like place personally, but if your looking a party, almost american frat house atomsphere, this place usually has it..

award winners i would definetely say barneys or even the greenhouse on haarlemerstraat. green place seems to be getting rave reviews lately on there green, so you may find some big name strains there that are grown well

mellow - i would also say mellow yellow as its quite big in the back and can be relaxing.. not very hectic in there most of the time. i would also say rokerij can be mellow depending on your tastes.. they have low light, seats on the floor and small tables kinda vibe going on. very old school i find and like i said depending on your tastes, it could be very mellow.

another really cool mellow place i recommend highly is Lost in Amsterdam.. you cant buy there, but it is very cool mellow spot . they also serve beer and other hard liquor drinks.

social.... dampkring is always busy and still has good chronic..
hunters/coin is also normally a bit busy and also has some good weed.

Many shops fall into two of all three catorgories,

Barney's - Award winning and laid back, defently a social hotspot as it ofter gets crowded,

Greenhouse - Award winning, but from my knowledge its not very laid back as the budtenders can be arseholes, again defo a social place as they are always full (4 in and around Dam) i've heard the shop on Tolstraat (off the centre map) is the best of the 4

Homegrown Fantasy - Best Cheese strain and best toilets in the Dam

My personal all time favourite 5 would have to be,
1. Mellow Yellow (As Kermit says it is the name) and the weed is quality, lots of locals and tourists and a nice deal on the blueberry.
2. 420 De Kuil - Looks like a bar, and has that bar feeling, the staff are the friendliest in Dam, a very socialable place, ask SoulRider
3. GreenPlace - Award winning strains that maintain their choongness, a great chilax area at the back with cushioned benches (and hip hop music whenever i was there, mellow hip hop music)
4. Dampkring - The original, exactly how a coffeeshop should look from the outside in, very touristy tho and hard to get a seat at the quietest of times
5. Grey Area - for quality of weed and selection this place is tops, very friendly but also very very very small, that is why i dont rate it as the no.1, but is a must stop.

Hope this helps mate, have a good trip
