Hotel The Globe on Oudezijds Voorburgwal is another one you could try. Haven't stayed there for a while but remember that it was cheap and not that bad. Has a bar, pool table and a patio area out back next to a canal which is a good place to catch some sun in the afternoon.
If you have a few more Euro per night check out The Old Nickel, as the barman said 'it's a smoke detector not a grass detector, just make sure it doesn't go off and you'll be fine'

Yeah, I suppose what I really like about it is sitting in the summer on the patio area out the back that overlooks the canal. But hey it's cheap and central.

I'm looking into staying at the globe, I know it's lively but is it going to be a bit too lively seeing as it's down the RLD?

I voted for the Bulldog hotel. Been there 5 times out of my last 6 trips and never a problem as such.

The dorms (and private room we once stayed in) were clean and the lockers were fine (dorms only) assuming you take your own padlock. The shower\bog room has always been clean on my stays there.

You cant smoke in the room but the hotel bar area is available to smoke in 24\7. And a bonus if you get one of the leather sofas. Even smoked ok in the hotel reception a few times. And it's not just younger people that stay there, seems to be mixed ages from my experience.
