Amsterdam Coffeeshop Directory Forums

planning my feb 2010 trip and i want to go to 3 other cities in holland besides haarlem and amsterdam. any recommendations? my only requirement is the cities must have coffeeshops.

Utrecht, Delft & Beverwijk - note I've never been to Beverwijk.

will update after this summers trip , we' plan on visiting fave towns Leeuwarden, Zutphen...
Leeuwarden seemed to have the best Buitenland CS scene we've experienced , with Zutphen most Golden Agey , cool to be in , centrum ...with 3 nice shops ...Liked Deventer and Zwolle Scenes as well ... Alkmaar would round out a top five ...look 'em up in the Directory for our reports. In February you say...wouldn't it be sweet to be there if they finally froze enough for an Elfstedentocht !!

not sure what a Elfstedentocht is, but i was in amsterdam last january and it was cold enough that they let one canal freeze. saw some people ice skating on it.

Leiden is nice to

Sneek and Groningen are 2 of my favourite towns in the north ,but avoid Assen,happy corner coffee shop should be renamed crappy corner.

Beverwijk is ok, got a few coffeeshops the best being Splif1 and it is very close to Wijk aan Zee which has got a really nice beach where there are some old German bunkers in the dunes.

Rotterdam is also a good choice but I would give it more than just a day trip if you want to get a real feel for the place. Have spent the last couple of new years there and have had a great time. There is art everywhere, from old style statues to trains coming out of the ground at 45 degrees.

Tilburg is also another good place to visit and the home of the Toermalijn, one of my favourite coffeeshops in Holland.

Groningen is a University town in the north east near the Assen racetrack. Let's face it, only a mug can't have a good time in a University town

If you really have the time, I would also suggest Maastricht and especialy Valkenburg which are in the Limburg region and probably one of the only places in Holland that has hills. I should point out that Valkenburg doesn't have any coffeeshops (although from what one of the local barmen was saying this may change soon) so get some in Maastricht first.

A good friend always nags me to visit the Panorama Mesdag (sp?) in den Haag, which apparently, is one of the last existing paintings of its kind still housed in its original structure. In case you're unfamiliar with this style of painting (as I was), it is a 360 degree landscape depicting the seashore. One climbs up a ladder and emerges in the middle of a sandstrewn tableau with actual sand and props (seashells, etc.). From that vantage point, it's supposed to be nigh impossible to discern where the sand ends and the painting begins. Natural light from a skylight above adds to the illusion.

The same friend warned me away from visiting the International Court of Justice which he said was about as interesting as touring a large office building.

In addition, you pass through the tulip fields on the way to den Haag which should be in bloom this time of year. Den Haag is supposed to also have some great Indonesian restaurants. For a list of coffeeshops, Lemming has compiled the following page (you'll need to scroll down a bit):

Eindhoven:
- lively city
- nice coffeeshops with good buds
- other things to do as well, many bars, discos etc.
- has an airport and a nice shopping-mile

Tilburg:
- lively city
- very nice coffeeshops with very good weed (sometimes better than Ams)
- near to Amsterdam

can recommend those two cities!
