The hotel section of the Dutch hospitality industry group Horeca Nederland has decided to boycott American Express charge cards because of the high fees, the Telegraaf reported on Sunday.
'The commission they charge is ridiculously high,' said Frans Hazen, who heads the hotel division. 'The likes of Visa and Mastercard charge 1.5%, but Amex wants between 2.95% and 3.85%. And the arguments they use to justify that are rubbish.'
Amex says it spends a considerable amount of money on promoting the hospitality sector and that its clients are big spenders.
Rather than imposing an outright ban, hotel owners will instead ask Amex card holders to pay by another means. 'Experience shows that nine out of 10 times they have another credit card with them,' Hazen told the Telegraaf.
