damrak has a shocking rep apparently. i know a few peeps who have stayed there and other spots on damrak and the general vibe is they're all shit but you couldn't be more central. could reecommend di-ann, old quarter, y boulevard. all decent.

Stayed at the Multatuli the first trip I took my girlfriend on. The accomodation was definately up to her standard.
I stay in a hotel opposite the Meeting Point on Warmoesstraat called Hotel De Mallemoolen regularly, shared bathroom/shower but found rooms 1 +2 to be satisfactory apart from the noise with the window open. Smoking was not a prob. Room 1 is a single and room 2 is a triple i think i got that the right way round.
Stayed at the Koopermoolen next door with my now fiance (same girl as Multatuli) and she was happy with the stay there.
Stayed at a hotel opposite the now closed Resin coffeeshop but cannot remember the name... posh place with STAR rooms, LCD TV;s, minibar and a strange half see through glass partition enclosing the shower and toilet. The glass sink in this place was funky.
Seasons hotel near Heinekan brewery was again a satisfactory hotel just a bit far out for walking to the redlight coffeeshops.
The best place we stayed at was The Rookies Townhouse (no longer available) opposite Rookies, this was my virgin trip 6 years ago with two best mates and my brother. Mad times here, mushrooms and a crazy trip...
The place that head fu*ked me an my fiance was an "apartment" in the Thorbekplein Hotel, Double room with access to the small kitchen and bathroom.. The place was painted all flesh pink colour and had a real bad vibe to the place.. could have been the bedroom set to many a slasher movie kinda place.
Stayed in semi-posh places but always seem to come back the the Mallemoolen. It's somewhere I feel comfortable on my solo trips and booked in a quad room there for my June 2009 trip. Going with the guys who shared my virgin trip all those years ago. Can't wait.
I'm sure that wherever you stay you will have a great time.

I've stayed at the Damrak and the Avenue. The Avenue was the nicer of the two.

Hi Ray,
I stayed at the Damrak a few yrs back and to be honest, it was alright...
Nothing special, don't get me wrong - and the breakfast was abandoned after the first two mornings in favour of Barney's, which back then was better value than it is at the moment, but it served it's purpose. (And it had a lift!)
The Di-ann is a rare find - extremely friendly staff with a great buffet breakfast, and if you get a balcony room, you can sit out and toke away your troubles. Not the cheapest, but worth it for the little extras like a safe and fridge in the rooms. Good call, angry pirate!
I've been staying at the Vijaya lately - easy going staff, clean rooms, good breakfast - a consistently good stay each time. In fact, I'll be back there again in 13 days!
A lot depends on what you expect from a hotel room in Amsterdam, Ray... I've seen reviews of so many hotels where people complain about the stairs in Amsterdam, and seem quite shocked by the lack of lifts - well, this is the norm in Amsterdam, unless you pay for the 4 and 5 star places!
If you want ensuite rooms, then obviously this costs a little more - I personally always opt for the private option these days, but if you don't mind "roughing it" a little with shared facilities, then save a few €s that way.
Breakfast is another little luxury that isn't essential as there are so many places open nice and early that can provide most types of "morning" food, but hey - if it's included, then why not take advantage of the opportunity to load up on calories for the wake n bake session that's soon to follow!

morning gents and thanks for the replies, very much appreciated.
our hotel really needs to be within walking distance of central station as the mrs cannot really walk far, an elevator is also a must, again due to the mrs.
we have picked the 3 above plus the likes of the prins hendrik and a couple more around that area based on location, we did used to stay on the botel but it aint there now.
there are still a couple more to pick from and if there are no others available we can always stay at the ibis next to the station.
will do some more homework on hotels later.
once again, thanks.
ray.

Hi ray, Old Quarter is a short walk from centraal, vijaya just a minute further. Also greenhouse effect and koopermoolen are close by. Old Quarter has a lift also. happy hunting.
On another theme, when you getting there dave?

I get in on the morning of the 12th about 9am, and leave early evening on the 15th - just a shortish trip this time around... money's a bit tight right now - unless I "forget" to pay the mortgage this month and have a bit of a blow-out instead...
That's got me thinking bad thoughts - I've got a bit of an extra wedge of cash coming my way early next month, so if I can keep the mortgage company off my back for four weeks, then pay them for the two months, I can actually relax a bit while I'm there and not have to worry about every last €!
Ahh feck - you're only young once. (Well that
was a few years ago now, but the idea's still good!)
