Blunts started in the eighties in NYC with a brand called El Productos. From there it went to Phillies because the Productos were harsh, and Phillies were easier on the lungs, as well as easier to roll. Phillies quickly fell out of fashion to White Owl and DutchMaster. People who prefer White Owls these days like the less harsh tobacco taste that Phillies brought while enjoying quality superior to Phillies brand. And like Phillies, you just split a White Owl down the middle and twist it up. With the Productos and DutchMasters, you have to unravel the outer leaf first, then split the inner, then roll the inner, and lastly rewrap the outer leaf over the inner. Those smoking DutchMasters are carrying on the El Producto tradition started in the Bronx and Harlem.intricatethakid wrote:In Jersey...(and the rest of the US I'm pretty sure), cigars are used for blunts. There is an outside tobacco leaf that wraps around the inner leaf, which is wrapped around cigar tobacco.
In order to roll one, you unwrap the leaf, then crack the inner leaf down the middle and spill out all the cigar tobacco or "guts". After this, you fill the inner with your herb, roll it up real nice, then lay out the outer leaf and roll that around it.
From where I'm from, these are practically the ONLY thing smokers smoke from. Joints have fallen out of popularity within my age group, and pipes/bongs are usually only owned by veteran smokers. Blunts aren't my favorite way to smoke because like stated above, it kinda kills the taste of really nice bud. However, it does go a long way for making the bud burn a shit ton longer, which helps when around here you get .8 of a gram of decent bud for $20. So blunts tend to help out getting more people in on less bud, because like I said, bud is just ridiculously overpriced here in the suburbs. However, I'm beginning to get a little nervous because with the amount of these things smoked by everybody I know, I'm beginning to think we're all gonna be in line for some nasty side effects down the road after inhaling so much tobacco.
Blunts are also really good for rolling up very large quantities of bud. I once rolled a nice 7 grammer of shit bud for me and my friends. We hotboxed a car and barely got stoned. At least smoking so much kept us busy for the better half of an hour lol
P.S. I'm pretty sure blunts became popular in the US in the early 90's/late 80's. They were very popular among some of the urban neighborhoods, and not to be considered racist, but I believe among many who are part of the black population. Over the years, with the popularizing of rap music and black culture, blunts have spread and are now enjoyed both by black and white smokers everywhere throughout the US... I think. Any US smokers who have any real knowledge on this? I'm pretty sure mine is nothing more than a theory lol
