LOL

I usually stay just on the RLD and am very aware of my surroundings when leaving the hotel. Never had any problems but have watched the teams of junkies from my hotel room pickpocketting people as has been documented in my trip reports.

I do feel safe in Amsterdam, solo, with my partner or with the boys. You just gotta be aware that liek in any tourist spot, If you make yourself a target you will be targetted (if that makes sense)

All in all just go out and have fun.

Perfectly safe, but then I don't go dark alleys late at night...

Being from Detroit, even the dark alleys seem safe to me.

In the Red Light District you need to be on your guard, but no more than any other big city.

just simple precautions like keeping your wallet in a front pocket, makes u a much harder target for pickpockets. Do not, EVER talk to the street dealers, once they know ur language they won't fuck off.
good to know, thanks for the heads up, Im heading to DAM in july.
is there anything else a newbie should know when going to the DAM in the summertime. Im going with 3 friends and one is a huge mofo, he has our back no matter where we are at or what the situation, but sometimes trouble finds us. whats the crime rate like in the DAM (tourist areas) ? is there a police presence in the RLD ?

The RLD has CCTV 24 hours & they are always cops cycling/walking about.

I've never really felt uncomfortable in Amsterdam. the RLD isnt a yacht club in Florida obviously. But it's the same as any big city. Keep yourself in check and dont wander down dark alleys at 3 AM completely fucked up....

I wouldn't do that at a yacht club in Florida!

peace,
hippy

i do think ive witnessed a robbery or drug deal gone bad in amsterdam, for obvious reasons the details are sketchy but first time i went me and my friend were walkin back towards the hostel at bout 4 in the morning, we were down some darkish street and saw 2 fellas ahead chatting next thing i know one shoves the other grabs something and legs it while the other one looked like he was about to take chase then instead just started swearing and lookin angry.

I felt safe last time I visited, and I was about 15 at the time... Keep your wits about you in the RLD, don't go around flashing anything (camera on string round neck etc) and don't attract attention to yourself. It seemed like one of the safest cities I've been to (including NYC, LA, San Fran, Paris, London....)

I have worked as a personal guard for diamond dealers and felt safe even then. Any city/place/situation has a (more or less) opportunity of being risky. Unfortunately that´s part of life.
