Female traveling alone

Post by smileyface »

Ok, so I'm going to Amsterdam for a week in July. I'm going alone, and well...my friends and family think I'm crazy :P Maybe also because I'll be staying at a hostel in the Red Light District.

So, should I for some reason feel unsafe? :?

Also, it would be nice to meet up with other smokers. Anyone else going the first week of July?

Keep a little street smarts about you and you will be fine.

See my reply to your introduction.

Hi Smiley

I think with some basic precautions the RLD is quite safe, even for a woman traveling alone. I stay at a hostel, where many people traveling along come, and so I am never alone for long. I don't think it will take long to find like minded souls to hook up with for your trip. You don't want to be walking around the RLD from 2 am to 7 am or so, especially if your alone. I think the danger is way over rated.

I know I'm male, but I live in the red light district, and there really isn't any trouble. I see solo women and groups of women walking around. As long as you are street smart and act confident you'll be fine. I have female friends who come here on their own, and are always off and about without any issue. It really is a safe place to be.

Just use your common sense and have a blast. It's safer than most cities in the USA. Enjoy.

You can always leave the RLD and get nicely baked elsewhere in the City. My advice would be if you feel even slightly uncomfortable, do a 180 and go somwhere else. Dampkring. Dutch Floweres and the Tweede Kamer are all on Konigsplein , all well chilled and pretty central. My rule of thumb is that once you get south of Dam Square theres little of the tawdry tackiness of the bits, like the RLD, near the Station. Have a cool break. I'm off for a few days on Wednesday, cant wait!
