Oh my god some of my favourite places are on that list, especially on Warmoestraat, once the most characterful and crazy street in 'Dam- remember when the police station was next to Hill St Blues? The Stablemaster Hotel?! Last Waterhole and G-Force!! Actually just off, but close enough...

Stayed at Meeting Point on my first ever trip in '94 when Amsterdam, and Warmoestraat in particular, catered more to the budget traveller and us beer-loving Brits in particular, the whole point being it IS a slightly seedier area but backpackers don't mind that as long as snacks, beer, beds and buds are plentiful and cheaper than elsewhere-it is the fringe of the RLD for God's sake, what do you expect! The magic of Amsterdam used to be that there was a place for (almost) everything, as long as everything was in it's place, keep the sex and drugs (largely) in the RLD and everyone gets along fine. TOLERANCE!

Unfortunately the EU seems to be attempting to homogenise and remove the character and individuality of all its member states so that all streets will one day look the same, filled with the same bland chain hotels, chain stores, chain coffee sellers as each other (wonder how many of these will pop up where the closed shops were?).

At the same time the good burghers of Amsterdam seem to be willing to do anything to appease them, including closing ladies' windows that have existed side by side with the church for centuries, so that their city will one day presumably be filled solely with their tourist of choice, fat, balding, middle aged, middle class, middle of the road tour groups who stay in the big hotels, tour in the big tour boats, visit the Heineken brewery and fuck off home with their cheese and tulips. What a sad demise for the one-time city of tolerance...rant over, I feel slightly sick.

If all the shops on that list are forced to close and are not allowed to reopen elsewhere I will STOP going there to spend my money. To force something like this is just wrong.

Its like the city is committing suicide.

to lose any shops is a big shame, whether you personally go to it or not, it shows a big change in what could happen in the future

Sucides a bit strong, it will have as many visitors, just more crowded coffeeshops....then you'll find me in Vondal Park.

Shame....i hope not too many people loose their income.

Even if you dont go in these shops, its gonna affect us all,cos the many people who do use them, will be forced out into the quieter shops around the rim, that a lot of us prefer...

And it will put more strain upon the 500g max limit that the coffeeshops can hold. Thus giving the authorities reason to close more.

with less coffeeshops will be less competition for otehrs so could warrant a price increase possibly?? ( thats just total speculation btw)

I agree suicide seemed like a strong word to describe it and I was high.

But I think if ideas like these go through then a few years down the road suicide wont sound so crazy.

What about Babylon Coffeeshop, on the road between Warmoestraat and the Damrak???

and if your saying one 2 of 4 age going on Oudebrugsteeg, then surely its got to be Grasshoper II and Speak Easy.... De Kuil and De Kroon are the otherside of the Damrak and are the better 2 shops out of the 4.

Be a shame to lose shops, the closure of even the worst shop (Old Church IMO) has to have a bad effect on all of us, once they start they will figure out more and more ways to ban coffeeshops all around Holland.

When is this ment to be happening???

EDIT- forgot to add the other road which babylon was in between
