Alarmed by a sharp drop in visitors, the tourism associations of Amsterdam and the Netherlands announced Monday they are jointly promoting Give Me A Break — a marketing effort offering a total of 1,001 free hotel nights to tourists this Spring.

In the wake of the worldwide economic crisis tourism in the Netherlands dropped by 8 percent in 2008.

After a steady increase each year since 2003, in 2008 Holland saw 10.1 million tourists — down from a high of 11 million during the previous year.

Economic problems that have seen many Americans lose jobs, investments, savings and even their homes. On top of that, the weak Dollar versus the strong Euro make vacationing in Europe more expensive for tourists from America and elsewhere.

Give Me A Break is financed by the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions (NBTC), the Amsterdam Tourism & Convention Board (ATCB), as well as participating hotels in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Tourists are entitled to one free hotel night per person, from May 18 through July 31, 2009. A total of 1001 nights will be given away on a first come, first served basis.

In addition to a free hotel night in Amsterdam, visitors will also receive a free voucher booklet with their booking to help them explore the best that the city has to offer. For more information and to book a free hotel night in Amsterdam, visit www.holland.com.

EDIT - It was brought to my attention that the link included in the news article does not work. This link http://us.holland.com/ or http://www.iamsterdam.com/en/visiting/a ... emeabreak/ does work. Peace.
