How easy is it to get work in.....
How easy is it to get work in.....
Coffee shops over in Dam, I also am contemplating a move over after my world tour in 2010. Twas thinking that the best place to work would be in the shops themselves but I assume it is quite a popular job choice.
Does anybody you know work in one?? And if they do can you point them in my direction as would love to hear first hand on what it is like.
If I cant get a job doing that I guess my next option would be working in that giant Pathe cinema.

You really should PM MileHigh he's probably the best person I know of to ask about that.
I once asked that very question of an English dude, behind the counter at the bush doctor on Thorbeckeplein, expecting some to hear about the Kafkaesque process, he simply said he came over one weekend and by Monday or Tuesday he was working as a bud tender at the BD, easy peasy lemon squeezy. YMMV.

Yeah I've had that same idea actually...
I live here in the Netherlands now, studying, and I need some income to help the student loans and what not...
and to be honest working at a coffeeshop would be a dream come true... but to be honest who else one this board wouldn't want to be a budtender?
perhaps i'll msg milehigh as well...
peace

Yer it deffo would be a good job. Im hoping the fact that I have some experience may help the chances. But in the main coffee shops it always seems to be fit looking girls doing it!

Re: How easy is it to get work in.....
Not really hard at all. The thing is with the wages they pay and the cost of living in Amsterdam, there is no chance you can pay your rent, eat, and smoke. Most coffeeshop employee's are part time and really don't make shit. A few do but it's a very few. And believe me when I say the new wears off very quickly. It is just a low paying job like any other really. You would be better off finding a skilled labor job and just part timing at a CS so you could brag here.Mr Oranje wrote:Coffee shops over in Dam, I also am contemplating a move over after my world tour in 2010. Hmm I get what your saying, skilled labour job maybe out of my skill set though, I'm more into the management side of things. As when I worked back in Portsmouth I was running a multiplex cinema. Thats why I may work in the one over there...Maybe.

I think the other big divide here is whether or not you are a citizen of the EU. If so, then getting any type of job in another EU country is much easier than for a non-EU citizen.......I once asked that very question of an English dude, behind the counter at the bush doctor on Thorbeckeplein, expecting some to hear about the Kafkaesque process, he simply said he came over one weekend and by Monday or Tuesday he was working as a bud tender at the BD, easy peasy lemon squeezy. Amsterdam is an expensive city, so if you took a low paying gig, you would probably need a rommmate or two, in order to pay the bills.
I have also heard that the Dutch bureaucracy is a freaking nightmare.
(Can't get a flat without a SOFI number, can't get a bank account without SOFI number, can't get a SOFI number..
From my experience, the Dutch are Bureaucratic, but their bureaucracy actually causes things to be much more effiecient. I phoned up for my SOFI appointment and got it the next day. Went to the appointment with my passport, and 40mins later, walked out with a SOFI number. Then I was able to get flat and bank account. I haven't had any problems.Ingwey Gooblebogger wrote:I think the other big divide here is whether or not you are a citizen of the EU. (Can't get a flat without a SOFI number, can't get a bank account without SOFI number, can't get a SOFI number..). For a high payng job, your firm might cut through all the bullshit, but I don't think coffesshop owner (nor any other low wage employer) would go through the hassles for a low wage employee.
As to getting a job in a coffeeshop.. Who isn't trying...
It's seems to be all about being in the right place at the right time to get a job in a CS.... Luck I think they call it
Just trying to be 'En Vogue'

With your dedication to Old Amsterdam the owner ther should give you some part time work. He might be able to get better opening times then and just think of the extra customers you will bring in.SoulRider wrote:I'm used to working in bars, just the same sort of shit jobmilehigh wrote:Or just looking.
