Cube homes become Rotterdam's newest hotel

The geometric houses along Rotterdam Blaak station are now more than just a tourist attraction.

Rotterdam -- Visitors to Rotterdam's cube homes will now be able to stay overnight in the landmark buildings.

Some of the famous houses have been converted into a 49-room hotel accomodation, including a restaurant and a meeting room for up to 250 visitors, according to the Youth hostel organisation, Stayokay.

An earlier plan by Rotterdam's local government to house ex-convicts in the buildings was discarded after a public outcry.

The unusual design of the yellow cube-topped buildings, which were completed 25 years ago, makes them into a popular tourist attraction. The distinctive buildings have an upper floor in the shape of a cube balancing on one of its corners, and were designed by architect Piet Blom.

The earliest residents, however, complained that the interior of the cube homes was rather small and not very practical.

More information can be found on the cube homes' website.
