Been back since monday, fully recovered now so heres my trip memories, or at least the highlights as a lot of the week was spent on the bike pushing round the pedals and doing crazy stuff like 80 Kms. in a day, against the wind. Now I ain't some lycra clad demon of the highways in any shape or form, so for you serious wheel men and women out there I think 80k is pretty damn good, only on one day though, average was about 65 throughout the week with a few down days for trippin and smokin.

The Other One (Jerry)

A down day, still couldn't lose the bikes though.

Really the trip was a bit of a comedy of errors, heres how it goes.
Saturday evening, ride across London to Liverpool Street station for Harwich and the overnight ferry to The Hook. Half way along kensington High Street, (bombing along, I'm up for this been dreaming of nothing else for weeks), look round, wheres he gone, how can I lose him? he's wearing a Hi Vis coat for goodness sake; but I had and this is virtually in home territory. Oh dear got him on the mobile, reassured he will find the station, and we continue along our chosen routes. I arrive at station at about the time I had planned with loads of time to spare and this is an early train so no probs if we miss it theres a couple more that catch the boat, the journey has begun. Anyway Jerry hasn't arrived after about twenty minutes so on the phone, yes he's OK just a minor navigational error wont be long and sure enough after ten minutes there he is. Now I had a couple of Vapps before I left home and of course an hour later I'm flying and well in to it, but I'm getting the feeling that my mates almost legendary absent mindedness may have entered a different level as he hadn't had a smoke for a bit.
So here we go, Train, Harwich,Ferry, its quite a nice boat fairly big and comfortable for an overnight trip, we get on board bags in cabins and down the restaurant for a good meal (nothing memorable though), meanwhile that familiar shudder goes through the ship as the engines are fired up, and we are truly on our way. after dinner its a stroll out on to the afterdeck for a couple of single skinners and off to our cabins for a good nights sleep.
Early call relatively as our clocks go forward an hour but hardly jet lag, so get some breakfast grab our bags and down to the car deck for bikes ready to hit those Dutch fietspads, and not a few coffee shops. Nice wake up down on the car deck as there were about a dozen bikers with such classic machines as Triumph Bonnevilles, BSA Gold Stars even a 650 fish tail Matchless. And as the doors were opened, they fired them up, that was a good blast. So the plan is to ride up to Ijmuiden for our first stop and a down day for acclimatization purposes. Its a good distance but do-able on a good day with a little help from the wind, well it was a good day but no help from the wind I fear, in fact we had a 15 to 20 right in our faces from the off, anyway in the Hook it was far too early on a sunday morning (about 0730 I think) for any smokies so we would check out the one in sheveningen but even it might be too early for that. and so it proved. As we were really batting the wind all the way I didn't really want to go right into The Hague cos that would have been a couple of hours and a bit off track as we follow the coast route, I dont think we wanted to jump on a train just yet, but if you are going from city to city you are never very far from a rail line, which is a blessing because I can only take so much discomfort. So no stopping at sheveningen, carry on north and see how far we go before we've had enough and by the mid afternoon we got to Noordwijk. They are supposed to have a coffee shop there, but I stayed there for a week once and never found it, however we stopped for solid fuel and decided to pull the plug on the bikeing for the day so rode about 6k inland to Lisse and got on the train. Change at Haarlem, at last, Green Leaves appear in my eyes. And so it is, off the train, down the road, Willies Sativa emporium. What can you say, Super Shiva comes to mind and it just took all the pain away in an instant and buzzed me up beautifully. I think the drug industry must be one of the herbs loudest enemies as I think they would take a hit from legalisation. So a couple of spliffs later we are on the other train up to some little place because Ijmuiden doesn't have a working rail station anymore but just a couple of K into town, check in the hotel and its out on the town ha ha! Funny little place Ijmuiden, its a working town of ships, they have the big sea locks there for the ships coming down to Amsterdam, a massive steel mills across the waterway and the sort of people you find in those kind of places its not on the tourist track. Also two lovely Coffee Shops, obviously from the nature of the place they are "locals" but very welcoming to two strangers, I had twenty years at sea in my younger days so I feel comfortable round the docks and the dirt, no Ijmuiden is a lovely clean town well the bit you can see :)
I didn't keep much of a list of what and where I smoked it but our first smoke in the town was Amnezia Haze in the Scolo and as it's the first time I smoked it I thought it was a beautiful smoke with a really nice flavour, and it was 7e/gr, and also I now realize that the Amnezia is not in its title by chance, a brilliant Coffee Shop, internet vapourizer and vap/bong big gadget. Long day many miles ridden nice gentle walk through Ijmuiden thats it for day one.

Cool, something I considered for the future is biking from Harwich to Amsterdam and toking in the various spots along the way.

Look forward to reading the rest of your bicycle adventure.....wonder where you'll end up  :D

Hi again, Day 2, I woke up to the sound of squabbling seagulls jostling for a place on a crowded roof gable, and the sun streaming in. It felt like I was on holiday, well so I am. I would like to say that I leapt out of bed like a spring lamb, but that would have been a foolish thing to attempt to do and I took the slow route to the bathroom. Not too much aches and pains though as I have my stash of Arnica Montana and that is also a miracle herb.
Anyway we haven’t got anything planned for today which is great as I love to just mooch about places with nowhere much in mind. Apart of course, for a visit at a respectable hour, to the local smokerama. So off we went walking after breakfast to have a good look at Ijmuiden which is a bit of a couple of towns strung together along the waterway so you don’t quite know when you go from one to the other, but its a good walk from one end where we were staying to the other end up by the docks where the coffeshops are, and by the time we ambled up there about 11ish Joe Cool was doing business and so we took coffee and a Schmoke. I like Joe Cool, its right outside the dock gate and across the street from the local bikers HQ and storefront, a nice couple of hogs, not too much chrome lounging outside, and nice mixed, early day crowd inside, remember its docks and steelworks round here, a good vibe not at all heavy. I think we had a couple of ready rolled Pollen joints with our first coffee, and I know that for the second one we got a gram of Thai, rolled up a couple and went to watch a few ships being shepherded through the locks for an hour or so, exciting stuff.
So we will go back to J.C’s. later and tell more about it, but after an hour or so of hanging out we felt the need to do something so we got the hydrofoil down to Amsterdam, great about 20 minutes and 7 euros return, way to go folks.
Ah, the big A, epicentre of our dreams etc.etc. Well not quite, yeah I know I dream about it too, but this trip was about travelling to parts we hadn’t seen before so for now, just a minor but very pleasant and familiar diversion. You can’t ignore the buzz of the place though, Amsterdam hustles and bustles like no other city I know so I do love the mad place. So Jerry and I mooched, a few sights and a few coffeeshops, so although I never took much notice of which ones or what we smoked we did have a very enjoyable afternoon. Back to Ijmuiden flying down the waterway, beat a couple of kids to the front seats, getting old can be such fun.
Hotel, shower, dinner, Joe Cools , like I said earlier a nice friendly kind of shop with a respectable menu, comfortable seats, good varied music loud enough to hear but still talk and I treated myself to a bit of their internet just to keep up with the ACD trying not to be too smug I hope. A joint or two in there a quick stop by the Scolo and thats it for another one.
Years ago I just used to get my bike, passport, ticket and dosh together and go and do whatever I fancied (I have a Diamond of a wife, 37 years, a blessing to any man), but my mate who I travel with now likes a bit of a plan so now things are more organised, hotels pre-booked, which in itself means where you’re going to be and when, but it has its benefits I guess, no more 8pm searching for hotels at least. So the plan is the next 2 nights (Tuesday Wednesday) in Groningen then back to Ijmuiden and some A’Dam time 2 nights, then Saturday ride to the Hague stop overnight and on to Rotterdam the next day Sunday and out to the Hook for the night ferry. Some long miles to do. Groningen is too far from Ijmuiden for a single ride so we intend to train it in one direction and train and bike the other way and it doesn’t matter which way we do it, we will leave it in Thors hands.
I hope someone out there is enjoying reading this a bit, because I’m enjoying writing it but we have lives and for now I must get back to mine. Only wish I remembered to take more than a few random pics on the mobile phone now, never mind.

I for one, am enjoying this report Immensly.
Admittedly a stoner, I find great joy in reports which focus on the country and the trip rather than just the pot.
Keep up the good work man, I'll be reading every word you type.

Great reporting so far, I also love when people report on places off the beaten tourist path. I was in Groningen for 3 days back in October and I found it to be a pleasant place and i felt safe walking alone at all hrs. The locals could tell i was tourist they told me, but were interested in why I'd go to Groningen. (I was on vacation)

If you are into music/a musucian you'll really like the music store on A-Straat 15. http://www.westerhaven.nl/ ...some instruments i make are there for sale..... :)

The menus in the shops i went to seemed to all be the same. Most if not all were pre-bagged but you could smell look touch choose between the bags they lay out for you. Snow White, White Widow, Skunk, Northern Lights, Power Plant, Thai, Jamaican...Moroc, special maroc, afgan, nepal, red leb....most shops seemed like they all had the same supplier. The market in the middle of town really has great produce too, as most markets will. If i had my map i could suggest the coffeeshops and where they were......but follow your nose...youll find it.

the hydrofoil ... the Fast Flying Ferry ... it's fantastic!

here's another web page of the Fast Flying Ferry

in january early one morning i took the hydrofoil from just outside of centraal station to Velsen Zuid the first stop in Ijmuiden

this stop is at the north-east corner of Nationaal Park Zuid Kennemerland a 'wild' bit of the netherlands which borders the sea and with forests and dunes and good paths and lots of wildlife including deer

the ferry ride was wild, like spidergawd i sat in the very front with windows to the front and both sides and it was like you were in the driving seat of a very fast motor car (maybe even a 'hot-rod') and you were a teen-ager and you were cutting up the traffic on a saturday night

the ferry is much faster than the other boats on the water and the captain would come up behind a slower boat and wait until the other sea lane was clear and then he would accelerate and just whip 'round the other boat, it was nuts

imo a trip on the boat, an optional walk around the national park (including a few smokes in the outdoors) and the return trip back to amsterdam - highly recommended as a 'day out' of town

yes there is someone out there and yes i am enjoying reading this

and you may have to get on with your work life but i am going to put mine off for a little bit and have another coffee and another morning smoke and re-read your trip reports so far, i may even get the map out to plot the journey so i am ready for the next installment

thanks for the time spent writing ...

I will continue, at some risk of being boring, not least on account of probably having to mention the foibles of the wind and its effects on our bike journey throughout the week.
So in order to determine our days travel plan to Groningen, our first move after breakfast and checkout from our hotel was to ride up to the waterfront to see what was what, but before I got there I knew how it would be. Smoke from steelworks chimneys horizontal heading south west, fast; Groningen bearing north east from where we were, slow. Oh well, as we were on our bikes it only took 5 minutes to be inside Joe Cools with a nice pollen joint and a cup of coffee. Anyway a nice little smoke and go, so a bit later we are tooling off down the road to Haarlem for the train to Groningen, nothing too strenuous, about 15k. We find there are plenty of trains all day so as its near lunchtime we bomb into Willie Wortels Sativa for some, well Sativa , what else. I wasn’t keeping tabs on what was smoked everywhere but I know you kind hearted people will forgive that if the journey is interesting enough. It was becoming interesting in some quite strange ways as my cycle buddy who has always been, as I said earlier slightly absent minded really was causing me some concern, and by this time I had lost him 4 or 5 times since we had left the ferry, as when cycling he would suddenly cut in the turbo and blast away up the road like one of those legendary “lycra Clad Demons”, and as I carried the map, the compass and the plan I felt I’d better keep up, and the same in town, if I stopped to look at something the chances were that when I looked up he could be gone, I did check to see if my deodorant was working, but I have a good sense of smell and I carry a clean pair of socks and knickers for each day so I seemed OK.(I jest). So there we are, the fairly confused and the very confused, what to do? Well we ain’t giving up I’ve waited months for this, so with an eagle eye we continue. I only mention the above because it seems difficult not to when writing about a week spent in someone’s company.
We had a good train ride up to Groningen, arriving late afternoon and easily finding our hotel the De Dolen, very traditional and quite pricey, but as its central on the Grote Markt and as I only do the bike ride once a year then I like a bit of comfort, the only problem being that our rooms were at the back of the hotel with a view of a wall opposite and dustbins down below what a bummer, so I went down to the reception and politely expressed my disappointment at the view and , a result, sorry about that sir but the single rooms are at the back, but as we are not very busy right now would you like to try this one. A Suite no less, front of house with a view to match and the extra it cost me … a smile. That was fantastic and that kind of generosity of heart was to be found everywhere I went in Groningen I tell you, people there are just so laid back. Obviously that put me in a good feeling with the city but in all honesty I would have liked it anyway. As it’s a provincial city (province of Groningen) it has long been an administrative and trading centre going back many years, or centuries I should say, so it is a buzzing kind of place with University and Colleges, lots of atmosphere, and in fact especially at night a young city. Oh yes Coffeeshops, plenty of those, many and varied but in the circumstances we only checked out four of them in the two nights we were in town, all different and all excellent, but I’m tired now and I have spent too much time trolling other threads, If anyone is still around I will continue and write about the C/S’s tomorrow and everything else that I can remember. Well I tried to minimize mention of the wind and reading through I see I have done quite well on that score, however, tomorrow we will be out in the north Holland countryside on our bikes and that’s gonna be windy you can bet.
