Hello from Canada!
I was told this is the best place to start. So here I am. First of all I'd like to say thank you to Lemming, for activating my account so quickly.
Intro: I am a 39 year old computer programmer from Canada. Father of three. I love food, sex, marijuana, females, Reddit, whiskey, C#, sleep, dogs, cats & kids (my own). In that order.
I found myself here because my wife and I will be visiting Amsterdam for August 14th - 24th... without the kids... YES!
I had vacationed there, by myself, for a couple days back in May of 2005 and had a blast. I have always wanted to go back. The food, the people, the pot, the hash, the sites. I had a fantastic time.
So this time I get to take my wife. Me, obviously, I like my marijuana and my hash and what have you. The wife.. not so much. She's going strictly for the museums and history aspect. I had heard there are festival or two around the time we are coming, which will be nice. I also heard laws have changed in Amsterdam.
Article such as this one have caused me some concern:

I'm not interested in prostitutes. But what of the coffee shops, are they really closing down. What's their current status? What will the status be in August? Do I have to bring my own smoke?
I'd appreciate any info... or tips.. or recommendations on what I HAVE to do while I'm there.
Thanks!

You have been posted on the August Whos In Town page.
You can see who else may be in town during your stay.
JDS has a couple Meet and Greets during your visit.
By default I link your posting to your profile page here on ACD.

I can change it to a web link ( myspace, facebook, personal page )
or an email address if you want.
You may not be a first timer, but I think a read of this will maximize your efficiency once you get there.
How not to get hit by a bike and other stuff they forgot to tell you about Amsterdam.
Enjoy

Have a look at Puffin13's posts to find out the latest info in and around Masterdam and The Netherlands, shops are not closing down, but it is seemingly becoming harder and harder for them to be run with all the uncertainty on the furture of the Netherlands coffeeshop scene, aswell as the many rule changes....
Still the best place on the planet to visit, ive been many times, but have ignorantly not visited any museums, but im planning to do it with my girl in October.
Welcome to the forum and Have fun mate
