Sweet sassy, there are a TON of sativas that will get you up and running with no problems at all! I believe the Super Silver Haze would do quite nicely...and the old school White Widow would most likely fit the bill.
I'm not as knowledgable as 90% of the people here...so they'll chime in quickly with tons of strains for you

If you are new to tokeing I would advise against a Sativa. In fact I would advise against any hydroponic weed. You need to start with the old time favourites, the stuff the hippys of this world have been smoking for years. You want some nice gentle organically grown outdoor weed (check out YoYo coffeeshop) or some imported Thai/Jamaican/African 'brown' weed. You could also try a nice light Moroccan slate...
Strong Sativas can make people paranoid and/or anxious. Just like strong Indicas can make you feel VERY sleepy... I honestly think these types of pot are NOT for the beginners. Its like someone who has never drunk alcohol before dipping in with a bottle of absinthe!
Take it easy on your self pal... Good luck!

Seconded! Follow this advice! You don't mention in your post if you're planning to visit Amsterdam? Either way, look for
'Thai' or
'Jamaican' weed. It should be brown and contain stems and seeds (to be removed before smoking of course!). It's a lot milder than green skunk but still very enjoyable, and a good 'gateway' to enjoying stronger cannabis types!

I would add that smoking a strong sativa when you are not used to it can also cause you to go straight to bed, do not pass go, bed and die
I also slightly disagree with the posts telling you to start with outdoor. While they are definitely milder, and therefore less chance of over doing it, I would say just buy weed from Amsterdam that you want and smoke less
The trouble is with pointing people to outdoor weed is that it doesn't have the variety or strength of flavour of skunk, and for a lot of people, its not a taste they like. Smoking less indoor weed, than you would outdoor weed gets you just as high, and works out price wise to be just the same, because you are smoking less. Why lose the flavour? Just cut the quantity
You could always just smoke outdoor too, it's best for you to have as many options to pick the one that suits you best

I like this advice the most. This is what we'll be doing in August as our tolerance will be non-existent. I haven't smoked in months and my fiancé never has. We won't need to buy much weed at all to last us a week...maybe 5-7 grams

yeah smoking less is what I would usually suggest.. it's just from the original poster's account of
had a couple of drags and i was in bed by 9
i mean how much less can you get

I`ve come to think about this as well, since i`m not that much a weed smoker and headed to Amsterdam solo in august...
I normally buy a gram or two at a time here, and that would last me 2-3 weeks, since i only allow myself to smoke on saturdays (and there can be months when i don`t smoke at all), as a special treat after a hard weeks work
The perfect solution would be to have a group of 3-5 people, so everyone coukd get a gram or two of different weeds or hashes, and then share with the others, but as i`m going solo i guess i`ll just hope for a tolerance to build up quite fast, or i`ll be handing lots of leftovers to others when my week is done in the Dam...?

As far as tolerances goes, i know that it can takes a decent amount of smoking to bring it up. I've been smoking heavily for a little under a year Smoked pretty much every night with my roomates for a good 8 months straight.)
I got so used to it that, I'd have to take 2-3 gravity hits to get stoned and that was at the end of the school year (mid may). Then i stopped for a week because i went to Cancun.. the first thing i did when i got back was spark up. That one week break put me back at level 0 which was kinda fun. but again building tolerance takes time and alot of weed. what have you smoked out of? have you tried eating it or vaporizing it?

in the old hippy days the Thai/Jamaican/African varieties were sativa

i would guess the Strong Sativas mentioned here refer to the haze varieties which are indeed very strong and very much stronger than the old hippy weed, so yes avoid the hazes
happydaze777 wrote: Just like strong Indicas can make you feel VERY sleepy
and yes indicas can put you to sleep at 9pm, so avoid until the late evening, then sleep well
i am an old hippy who has been smoking for years and i would recommend going to basjoe and telling them you are a light and occasional smoker and could they please choose the better of the thai and jamaican that they have at that time and show you how to clean it of stems and seeds and crumble the flowers and leaves to a fine smoking mixture
then you can roll and enjoy ...

Hello old hippy!

I was just trying to make the point there is a world of difference (IMO) between weed grown 'artificially' under lights, with all kinds of chemicals been pumped there way and the lovely weed of old, grown in real soil under the gaze of the real sun. I think the artificial nature of indoor weed really heightens and Sativa/Indica effects. Great for the heavy smoker and a mine field for the first timer.
I also don't agree with the poster who says it would be a terrible smoke to start on. I know there is a lot of crap weed about but I have smoked some incredible Thai sticks and some beautiful African and Jamaican weed. All grown outdoor and very fragrant. The nicest bud I have ever smoked was grown outside in the Swiss Alps, in soil, organically. Just OUT OF THIS WORLD! Shame the Swiss have changed their laws as you used to be able to buy it over the counter as 'aromatherapy'!
