always have some sort of id on you for coffeeshops in case they ask. they wont take temp paper ids or photocopies.

yeah i believe our european cousins jus need an id card to travel , and we need a full passport !? what the f........... i also believe you need to have your passport on you at all times in the netherlands by law !? im sure i seen it on that amsterdam nights programme !

Yes, what you say is true.

From my understanding if a country within the EU has signed the Schengen treaty then any EU citizen can travel freely between these countries without a passport. However, as the UK has not signed said treaty, we need our passports to clear UK passport control, both in and out.

After that though, you should not have to carry your passport on you, just some sort of government certified I.D. (i.e. Driving Licence) as it is a requirement in several EU countries (including the Netherlands?) to be able to identify yourself to police upon their request at any time.

Of course, if I'm wrong someone please correct me. This is just what I was taught when studying the free movement of labour within the EU for my economics A-level this year, so pretty up to date.

Sorry for the double post, but it looks like I'm wrong. It seems that as the UK has not signed the Schengen agreement, it's citizens therefore do not benefit from it when travelling within the EU....
