Clearly, money. Although it's more about established wealth creation frameworks.

If booze and fag were prohibited, the established bodies that currently profit from them would lose out big time, including the public purse due to no tax revenue.

Although it was all about money then why would they not regulate and tax bud?

I think its a mixture of many things, but i tend to go with Boners explanation, that its a deeply ingrained part of our society. You can buy beer in England today which has been sinced 1758, thats a beautiful thing in my books. To have a connection with our long gone countrymen and women. I would not like to see fags and booze banned ever, right to choose and all that. Drinking is part of being English, as is watching the Ashes, combine the two, well thats why ive booked the next few weeks off work.

Chemist and Author Alexander Shulgin Quoted,

" I, as a responsible adult human being, will never concede the power to anyone to regulate my choice of what I put into my body, or where I go with my mind. From the skin inwards is my jurisdiction, is it not? I choose what may or may not cross that border. I am the sole legal and spiritual government of this territory, and only the laws I choose to enact within myself are applicable."

It's not about the total amount of money, but individuals who stand to lose/gain.
If bud were legalised and taxed, then the public coffers would benefit hugely. But finding an individual to support this is hard, as the currently establised business models regarding drugs are afraid of loosing revenue.
Funnily enough, these legal and illegal concerns have much influence over the individuals who have the power to change things.

This combined with the voting public's opinion of illicit drug use leads to very few politicians prepared to state the truth about such issues.

This is where we are at present, and it will take much more public education and more MPs who are prepared to sacrifice their future before we can move on.

This is the main reason. They can control and tax it easily. If pot was this easy it would be legal but the min they legalize it everyone and their brothers would be growing and the govt cant control it. Its that simple for them. arseholes.

True, with weed this is a pertinent point. Much less so with drugs like cocaine and heroin though.

Bear in mind that one can grow one's own tobacco, and make one's own beer or wine. Most people prefer not to.

Again, admittedly with weed, I imagine a much higher proportion will be self-created, but isn't some tax better than none at all?

Well possibly, the public offices would only benifit if the weed they grew was decent and well priced, i dont think youll find much tax would come from weed. If it was legal, i think most people would grow themselves.

Honsetly man, i dont think it will happen in England for a long long long time. Well after im dead, America is a different ball game, the indivitual state laws give a bit of wiggle room for the movement. As soon as Cali goes Canada will. Unfortantly the abitly for the English public to be liberal in their thinking is being lost, the influx of right wing Christian groups will push the movement back years. Look what their trying to do in Holland. If you want legal buds, it will happen, it wont for a while in England.

Going off topic, but I don't buy that. Anyone can brew their on alcohol but most people don't and choose to buy it from a shop. The same would no doubt happen with bud if it ever became legal. I could see a few people trying their hand at it but I just don't see the masses growing their own...
