The best thing is to just go to different shops. IMO that's is one way to see the city.

From what I hear the "5 gram MAX" rule isn't as strictly enforced as you may think. If you end up with 6, 7, maybe even 8 grams you'd probably be okay. I'd imagine much over that and they may get a little skittish. Just ask for what you want. If it's over by way too much they'll probably just say, "I can't sell you that much right now." It's possible you could come back later in the day, or the next day for sure.

Or yes, you could just go to another shop. The shops in the center are within walking distance of eachother so it's not that big of a deal.

You never know unless you ask. It's worth a shot *shrug*.

Some do some dont, i personally have scored much more than 5 grams at certain shops. Deppens if its busy, if the budtender likes you, if the budtenders a prick etc. You could ask, however it is important to respect the rules the coffeeshops set, however if its a rule the gov has set and the coffeeshop itself dosnt respect it or think its important or cares about it. Then why not?

Sounds Great to me i'm wondering, you find a shop you like and you want to chill, but its busy. How do you keep from getting kicked out of a shop what works for you..Do you have to buy drinks, or food, maybe Tip the Budtender....ect...

you have to buy drinks to smoke in a coffeeshop. If you tip, you might get better/friendlier service.

As for the 5g rule, i've found it's usually pretty strictly enforced. If you go with a group of people tho, you can say it's 5g for each member of your party.

I've bought more than 5 grams in loads of coffeeshops, I usually just keep ordering whatever I want and if they say its 5 grams max just say you'll leave the shop once you've made your purchase, this might help.

As far as buying drinks/tipping is concerned places like Grey Area give you a drink if you make a large purchace +€50, tipping isn't really done but if you must then round it up to the nearest euro if say your purchases come to €12.50 give them €13.

yeah tipping certainly isn't compulsory, but you'll find tip jars on most budtender's desks in amsterdam. feel free to tip as much or as little as you like, it will be appreciated.

Also, don't expect to be bought a drink if you make a large purchase.. this is at staff discretion of course :)

Everything that Boner says is 100-percent on the money. Same experiences for us first time out.

Enjoy!

I have only been asked to keep to the 5g limit in a few coffeshops over the years, Central being the strictest I have come across. HGF have never bothered me, however much I have brought.

Buy your drinks regularly if you want to sit all afternoon, especially in busy coffeeshops during the summer months... Each table is worth a fortune i guess... Places like Barneys you may well just get shouted at and embarrassed to leave (witnessed with my own eyes on two occasions more recently (last 5/10 years)) if you don’t! Last thing you want going on in a coffeeshop when stoned.

I've never been asked to leave a coffeeshop.
As long as you are a customer they should leave you alone to enjoy yourself.
If I'm sitting and smoking a bag of grass I've just bought from a cs and I'm not thirsty I won;t order a drink, and Vice-versa, if I've just bought a drink I can sit and drink it, and as I'm in a coffeeshop it would be fine to light up a spliff, even if its been bought somewhere else.

Its important to buy something though, remember these places are businesses not just playgrounds for us.

Remember that you, the customer are right. Without customers these places would go bust. If a coffeeshop makes you feel uncomfortable then leave, and please report it back to the forum so we can all avoid these places...

True true... TBH, I've only felt uncomfortable in maybe two coffee shops out of 25 visited. I've never been bothered to buy drinks, or asked to leave. I my humble opinion, the coffee shop industry sends a wonderful impression of Amsterdam to the visitor (if that makes any sense).

My single worst and best experiences were both at the same shop, Barney's.

Our first three visits to Barney's we get served by Eric, (think his name was Eric), black hair, Aussie or British accent, nice guy. Took the time to explain and show the weeds and was extremely pleasant. I tipped him a couple euros once, and he said 'thanks!' and seemed to be very genuine. You notice when someone makes the effort to apply the weed stickers to the bags straight and proper.

Our last two visits, we got this guy who I can only describe as Mr Givestwoshits. This is the kind of guy who hums and haws while you look at the menu. He's the guy that just slaps the labels on the bags any which way.

Hey maybe I'm being too picky... but there are a lot of other shops to buy weed at right?

First time I get this guy, he gives me 5e change for a purchase in 4 x 1e, and then 1e worth of 0.20e. Hey I tipped nearly every tender I crossed in 25 different shops, but this move by this tender is not right IMO. If you deserve a tip, I will make damn sure I dig out money for a tip, don't hand me 9 bits. Sorry, no tip here.

Second time with this fella, I walked to an empty counter at 12:30am one night, and he's the only budtender. No customers, but he made me wait long enough that I almost said "hey yo!". He didn't acknowledge my presence until he finished reading whatever paragraph of the book he was reading. "Yeah" he says looking up.

I came for space cakes for our pre-flight treat the next morning, so I bought 3 and left. By know if was almost 12:45am, we were flying out in 5 hours.

There is a third, very climatic installment to this story... but I will only share it over a spliff. Sorry.

EDIT: I guess my point is, most shops are businesses and the best business practice is to have an open and welcoming environment that encourages the customer to spend money. Enjoy your time in Amsterdam, you'll mostly feel welcomed and should do your best to feel that way!
