The next morning I woke up feeling great. I left the Mr. sleeping and took a stroll with a plan to stop back by Rokerij III for some OJ and some good morning bud. For those of you who will never see the city all sharp and quiet at 8am, here it is for you.

Image

Rokerij III was quiet when I strolled in and my favorite raven-haired (beautiful) barista was working the upstairs room. I also really liked the bud-tender downstairs, the short-haired Dutch chap. I picked up some Laughing Buddah (9e/g) for my breakfast and some Northern Lights 5Xs Haze (12? e/g) to share with my hubby over brunch in our room. I was pleased to note that the NL 5X Haze was organically grown, and it was very pretty.

I went upstairs, got tea and fresh squeezed juice and sat down to chill with the Laughing Buddah. What can I say, but that it had me grinning from ear to ear in no time. Strong but not killer, and very energetic. The buzz is more grounded and present than a more pure sativa strain, but still just happy and alive feeling. For the price it is a bargain, and a great morning weed for a day that you plan to get something accomplished.

I settled into the smoke and spent some time contemplating the sunny sidewalk, the awesome decor, and the young french teenagers covertly checking me out. They were speculating about whether or not I speak French and what I was doing there. Looking around the coffee shops this trip made me realize that women are definitely a minority in the marijuana culture. Why is that, I wonder?

On the way back to the hotel I picked up food, and went to wake and bake the Mr. Ah, I love vacation.

Oh, and the NL 5X Haze? It was strong. Really strong, like, I have no memory of its taste and smell except to tell you that it was indistinct relative to the really strong high. It's like the haze for the people who want their high to be all happy and up like a haze high for the fifteen minutes before pleasant oblivion sets in. For hours. Seriously, we didn't end up making it out until almost 3pm. That's five lost hours. Hedonistic and Hazy.

(The re-sampling of the Laughing Buddah and Basjoe's Amnesia Haze might have added to the fog.)

Enjoying your report!

They gave you a lot of stem on that last one though, it's happened to me too. I found the stalk bit tastes pretty gross

Oh no, it wasn't like that. I just had already smoked the bud from the bottom. I couldn't wait to take the picture...

We finally made it out of the room in the late afternoon with a serious taste for milkshakes. The plan was to stop by Barney's Lounge for milkshakes before heading south, with plans of stopping in Mellow Yellow on the way to Katsu, Media, Little, etc.

I like Barney's Lounge, and I really enjoy chilling there. The decor is mellow with cool under-lit tables and comfortable padded banquets. The bud-tenders were playing some really excellent underground hip-hop. The rappers were British, but it had an awesome old school/ OG vibe. The dealer who helped us was a bit of a jerk. (Please note that is an exception there, as I like the other three tenders I've met.) When I told him I was looking for something strong and well balanced he pointed me to the Dr. Griphspoon (17e/g). I told him that I didn't want a pure sativa, he showed it to me anyways. Funny though, the container was almost out, and you all know that the pure Sativa's are really sparse looking anyways, so it looked like total shit. I told him again that I wasn't really looking for a pure sativa high because it was too up and racy, and he proceeded to recommend the two next most expensive weeds, which were both Hazes. At this point I concluded that he might not even be a smoker, and he certainly wasn't someone to be taking advice from.

My philosophy when I smoke in the dam is to use my eyes and nose to smoke the freshest, juiciest weed possible. Before a trip, I try to prioritize some shops and strains I'm hoping to try, but what I buy at the moment is only loosely guided by those priorities. More than anything I can tell you is smell (don't touch, that's rude) and look close at the bud before you buy it. It will help you get a good smoke every time. If a tender seems to be a jerk, don't hesitate to ask to see product before you buy it, but don't ask to see everything in the shop, and then ask for 1 g and be surprised that the bud-tender isn't so friendly. However, when a tender is a jerk, feel free not to buy or to speak up so that you still get the bud you want without getting ripped off.

So, if you know nothing else about the weed in the dam right now, you should know that up is in, and hazes are hot. That's cool. I love hazes. Meaning, that I wasn't exactly sad to have two beautiful bins of haze plopped in front of me. The Utopia Haze (15e/g), was running low, down to two good-sized buds and some shake, but it smelled like pure heaven and literally appeared to sparkle. (They have some nice lights at the bud counter at Barneys Lounge. The same ones, I believe that they use at Jewelry stores. My diamond was making rainbows, so you know the bud looked good.) I asked for the smaller of the two whole buds, which weighed in at 1.7g. I passed on the other bin, the G-13 Haze. I smoked it last month, and although it was nice, it didn't really do it for me. It's neither the strongest or the most distinctive of the hazes I've smoked. Instead I opted for some of the Amnesia Haze (13e/g & 37e/3g), Which had been my favorite smoke of the previous trip.

Image
Amnesia Haze Barney's Lounge

We each got a milkshake and settled into a corner booth. The Utopia Haze still smelled like heaven in the bag, with an almost overwhelming perfume of cherries and grapefruit. It actually tasted as good as it smelled, with a fruitiness that was both sweet and tangy in the mouth. It also was seriously strong. Probably the strongest I've smoked. It actually is the first sativa dominant weed to give me body stone, with warm tingles all over my whole body. It brings in a very happy, very peaceful fog. Honestly, I wouldn't operate heavy machinery after hitting this. Or even, walk.

Image

The Amnesia Haze was fortunately a bit head clearing. It had the same great rosemary and pine fragrance, and the clean spicy finish that it did last month. It is still a very sensual and energetic high, and it eventually had us stumbling out into the sunshine for a jaunt south. I know that a lot of people bag on Barney's for being expensive. While that is definitely true, the Barney's chains also have good weed (pricey? yes, but hell I'm on vacation.) Especially, they seem to have some of the tastier examples of the designer weeds. (Chick Weed?)

Great stuff, Geeky!

My fiancé has really enjoyed your report as well and has discovered that she too really enjoys the Hazes. Most of them are a bit too racy for my liking, but it seems as though a lot of females prefer them. Interesting....*scratching chin* :)

Super reporting and great pics. I only wish we would have been in town the same time as you two.

Yeah, I'm totally willing to pay top dollar for weed if it's worth it. In fact, just being able to get top quality weed is still novel enough to be fun for me.

I'm glad y'all are enjoying the reports, I'm having a lot of fun writing them.

M4M- Maybe we'll be in the dam at the same time in the future. You never know... I'm glad your fiancee likes the hazes too. I've been enjoying reading your trip report, and I've been dreaming about Amnesia's Pink Kush. I've almost bought it several times and now I really feel like I've got to try it.

I'll try to get more reporting done later today.

Peace,

Geeky

If you walk more South than West in your walk from Barney's Lounge to Mellow Yellow, you will pass through my favorite section of Amsterdam. The beautiful buildings line small canals and quiet streets. This was the first time I had been in Amsterdam in August, and I found the crowds in the main sections of the city a bit overwhelming and unpleasant. This sleepier section of the city remained much more peaceful as they were away from the tourist attractions.

Mellow Yellow was bustling when I came in and there was a brief line for the bud counter. This shop services more locals than the ones closer to the city center, and I feel like that shows at the counter. Even when the shop is crowded, the tender is efficient but doesn't rush a customer. Meaning they still try to help advise you about what's good and are still generous with showing the bud under discussion. I love this as I would prefer to wait and have good service than be rushed.

Blueberry Mellow Yellow

Cheap Blueberry (25e/4g) seems to be one of Mellow Yellow's big draws lately, as is the blueberry haze and the blueberry haze isolator hash. (Neither of which I've tried. I'm always hazed-out by the time I get to MY, maybe next trip I'll start there and then I can report.) I had really been hoping to try the LA Confidential (14e/g) but it was low when I was there and just didn't look like it was worth the price.

There has been a lot of discussion lately that Blueberry isn't as good as it used to be, not the same anymore, etc. I can't speak to that, but I can say MY's blueberry is nicely grown bud, tasty, and a great deal for the price. It has a light fruity smell and taste and a moderate, mildly energetic high with a bit of head fog. It would be a nice daytime weed or for a morning when you didn't want to be stoned off your face all day.

Image

I also picked up some Chocolope (14 e/g) because the nugs were frosty and smelled like chocolate and port wine. I had tasted Grey Area's Chocolope last month and found myself disappointed, so I wanted something to compare it to. Mellow Yellow's seemed like a good choice because I was already comfortable with the quality of their gear.

The Sleezestick (10e/g) caught my eye because of the price and the fact that it looked like a new addition to the menu (was pasted on on white tape over something they were out of). I asked to see it and I was almost knocked out by the smell. Super grassy, piney, and skunky at the same time, it has a smell that made my mouth water immediately.

Image

We also got some drinks and headed upstairs to chill in the slightly quieter area. I love the upstairs, because the padded deep benches around the walls are very comfortable, and if you pick your table right you can get a view of the counter downstairs. (If you are feeling hungry or tired, their hot chocolate with whipped cream is made with real milk, and comes in a tall glass with a lot of whipped cream.)

First we lit into the Sleezestick. It had a super oily smoke with a piney dank flavor, just like the aroma had promised. One of the strongest tasting weeds we had smoked the entire trip. It was neck and neck with the OG Kush for taste. It also had a strong stone most characterized by a strong, energetic, head rush. I am really intrigued by this weed, does anyone know if it bears any relation to Grey Area's Sleezestack? It almost seems like a skunk/sativa cross, but that's a little hard for me to tell as I'm not a grower or an expert. Seriously though, I wish you could smell this:
Image
Sleezestick Mellow Yellow

After chilling on the Sleezestick for a bit, we hit the Chocolope. It was positively sticky and had a knock-out chocolate flavor. It also just knocked our faces off, although I suspect from later smoking that it was more the combined effect of Haze ^ + Haze ^ + Sleezestick ^?^ + Chocolope that had us heading for serious brain fog. Later tasting suggests that the Chocolope definitely is a more balanced and moderately strong sativa/indica high that causes a lot of munchies, relaxation, and enjoyment of food music and visual stimulation. MY's Chocolope also didn't have the bitter-lemonaide undercurrent of flavor that Grey Area's did (under flushed?). Honestly I think the MY batch now was way better than GA's back in July.

Image

We decided to get some dinner and go back to the room because we weren't sure we had it in us to be educated consumers at that point. On the way out I stopped by the counter to get more Sleezestick. In front of me was a poor young chap who wanted to buy hash, but instead of admitting to the tender that he didn't know much about hash, just kept pointing blindly at the menu asking, "Is this good?"

BT, "If you like black hash."

C, "How does it compare to the Super Polm?"

(All I could think at this point is, uh, it kind of doesn't) and the BT was at a loss for what to say as well. The tender tried to sell him some Caramello, and then some nice Moroccan, but the Chap seemed resistant because he thought that the BT was trying to sell him weak sauce because he was a total novice.

Which is of course what was going on, but seriously, if you don't seem to have any idea about hash, and therefor are clearly a novice hash smoker, perhaps you should work your way up? I'm a hash virgin, more because I am a pot ho than because of any real commitment to abstinence on my part, but still, would I just start with James' terminator? Do I expect a tender to sell me his strongest stuff after I have just made it clear that I might roll the hash up and try to stick it in my arm?

Dammit, Geeky...your pictures are REALLY making me miss the gear we had a week ago! :)

I'm really happy to hear that you enjoyed our report. Hopefully, some day our tales will include having met each other as well. Although, I'm confident that you both could easily out-smoke us...but it would definitely be a lot of fun finding out for sure

I'm sorry to hear that you ran across a sub-par batch of Chocolope at GA. The budtender actually mentioned that recently they switched to a different grower for it. I suppose we'll just have to go back and try it again to make sure ;)

If they have it try Paradox for a real nice Chocolope, pretty sure it was around the €10 a gram price in April.
