Thanks quicky, and I'm very flattered. I actually figured out that it was a joke a few minutes later. Seriously though, the New Yorker is one of the magazines I maintain a subscription to even though abroad.
I actually am trying to build a career as a freelance writer and photographer. I was thinking about putting together an article and query letter for high times, but I figure that's a huge long shot.

Hi Quicky, I started to just answer your question, but got a little carried away, so instead, let me present to you Geeky's Guide to Picking the Perfect Haze. (edited to add that I'm such a stoner that I thought you were asking about Hazes, I'll expand to include pure sativa's and the other sativa dominant weeds later.)
Also, I would welcome other people's feedback as well, because I've found that the effects of a particular strain vary a lot.
Class Winner
My favorite haze for walking around the 'Dam is the Amnesia Haze. The Barney's Farm variety is my 1st choice (Barneys or Amnesia), followed closely by Basjoe's. The Basjoe's is actually a little strong for walking around. I like it especially when the day is clear and bright, because the visual effects of the weed really compliment the architecture of the city.

Barney's Amnesia Haze

Basjoe's Amnesia Haze
I feel like I should start a support group. Hi, I'm Geeky, and I love Amnesia Haze. Seriously though, it's the only strain I buy every trip. (Especially if you are with someone you will get to have sex with at the end of your walk.) Smoke this.
Most Interesting
The Utopia Haze from Barney's was pretty twisty and took you farther away from the present than most of the Haze's that I've smoked. It was really interesting to have an energetic high that was that strong and spacey. If you actually want to go on a bit of a mental trip, this was great.
I've only smoked one absolutely sparkly, juicy, nearly perfect nug of this strain, so I have no idea if it would be as good if the sample was of more average quality. I try not to buy weed of average quality, so hopefully I will never know.

Barney's Utopia Haze
The honorable mentions in this class go to Maco Haze from Mellow Yellow and Arjan's Ultra Haze from Greenhouse Lounge as these have somewhat similar effects, but less dramatic in a good way. They are both strong enough to give some real twist to the energetic and sensual haze high.
Most Intellectual
The Super Silver Haze is my favorite weed to chat over. It's not spectacularly strong, which means that you still want to interact with other people when you smoke it and I don't have to worry that I'll end up on the floor. I find the effects of this weed very creative, and I if I'm not with someone when I smoke it I usually end up working.

Greenhouse Lounge's Super Silver Haze
Most Relaxing
The people who don't like the Hazes are generally people who are feeling anxious or stressed out. If you smoke a really up, heady, energetic weed in that state things can get very creepy very fast. If you want to try a haze, but occasionally have bad experiences with very "Up" weeds, I would start with the Northern Lights 5Xs Haze. (Bio/Organic at Rokerij III last time I was there.) It still smokes mostly like a haze, but has a much smoother, slower rush to it. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to share as much of the great haze flavor.

Had silver haze (not strong) but hoping the super silver haze is much better as ive heard good things about it in forums

Stuart, I agree that 17e/g is pricey, and decided to buy the Utopia Haze based on the look and smell before I looked at the price. It was as good as the other weeds that I've smoked at the price point, but I think you will never get the best value at 17e/g. (None of the 17e/g weeds I've smoked are actually twice as good as the 9e ones.) However, for something unique and beautifully grown, I have no problem dropping 17e/g on vacation.
I've smoked the Silver Haze from Abraxas as well as GHL's SSH, and the SSH was both stronger and more interesting. It has a nice moderately strong high that I really enjoyed. It's still not going to be the strongest haze you find in the 'dam, but nicely balanced with some mellow to keep you from feeling to racy.

@greekymonkey very nice report man
but maybe u get another batch of the NL#5 Haze than I do the last time... it was so hazy unbeliveable... only a few hits from a joint and I felt the strongest sativa rush effect I ever had... It´s impossible to go to bed with this stuff...
but the Weed in the shops is not every time the same maybe u get another batch...

Maroc, thanks for the heads up about your experience with the NL5X Haze. Did you also get it from Rokerij? I found that the first 15 minutes after smoking it the high packed a big head rush, but for me and the Mr. it then became much mellower.
I think that different people's body chemistry leads to slightly different experiences even from the same smoke. For example, many people find Blueberry to have strong indica characteristics, and for me the high I get is always lightly energetic (although with a little body stone).

i must agree with that, for me the blueberry had a strong body stone, but with a clear head and very communicative, but my girlfriend nearly fell asleepgeekymonkey wrote:I think that different people's body chemistry leads to slightly different experiences even from the same smoke. maybe the hazes vary even more from person to person
Danke sehr. That's more than I could've asked for.
And on that note, I'll ask for more ... When you move on to covering the other categories of sativa (and I am looking forward to that time, BTW), feel free to discuss the qualities that characterize those types. When I'm in Amsterdam I get the impression that the term haze is used almost interchangeably with the term sativa. Please straighten me out.
Perhaps you should create your own blog, Geeky! The theme, of course, would be a gourmand treatment of wiet in Amsterdam. If you think you'll have continued access to the city, and if that sort of journalism is your cup of tea (heh), it might be a good way to establish your presence.
Just a thought. I promise to subscribe to your RSS feed :) - Q

This is in no way definitive, and I welcome other people jumping in to the discussion with corrections and additions, but here's my best explanation between Hazes and the broader category of sativa-dominant strains.
My understanding is that "Haze" originally referred to a specific strain that was bred in California in the 70s. It was a mix of Mexican/Columbian, Thai and South Indian pure sativas. It was characterized by the exotic aroma and mental "trippy" sativa high that remains the characteristics people talk about when describing hazes.
The Flying Dutchmen seed company claims to sell "The Original Haze" seeds from that late 70s stabilization, and that those genetics are the base for all of the Hazes in Holland. (http://www.icmag.com/modules/ICStraingu ... ain&id=337) That sounds like a bit of an overstatement to me, I'm pretty sure that there are "hazes" being sold in the 'dam right now that do not link back to those original cali genetics. (Neville's Haze comes to mind as one that I think I've seen attributed to a different genetic line, and Quasar Haze, which I think is a landrace sativa rather than a haze hybrid.)
In other word, hazes are a specific subset of sativa weeds, but there are a lot of sativa and sativa dominant strains that aren't hazes. Sativa weeds tend to be characterized by "up" "mental" and "energetic effects," they tend to have less-dense, slower growing, and longer bud structures, thinner leaves, and paler green coloration than indica strains. I've seen people describe the effects of sativa plants producing more of a "high" than the kind of "stone" that one gets from indica dominant plants.
Hazes specifically share those traits, additionally the high from haze genetics characteristically have a tactile component and an aroma that is fragrant, complex, and sweet that is not shared by all sativas. They are also renowned for being very strong.
I am by no means an expert, these are just my impressions.
