18 or 21

are a lot of places still only allowing over 21's in the coffeeshops

its just im going in august and my mate wants to bring his little bro
he's just turned 18 but he looks about 15 LOL

will he be allowed to buy weed in the coffeeshops???

Sounds like he will be asked for ID thats for sure,Ive seen people in like there mid 20`s being asked for ID

Almost all coffee have the limit to 18 years old.
Only a little number of coffee have the limit at 21 (1 in leiden, 2-3 in ams, etc..) so You can go in a lot of coffee without problem.
I'm in Amsterdam from 4 to 12 august if you want .....

In my expierence they're not too hot with ID checking, I went when I was 18 and never got asked for ID once, although I do look quite old for my age I guess.

I think you must of fell lucky, my wife has been asked for ID at 30, I've seen countless people get asked for ID in lots of differant shops, if a coffeeshop has someone under age they can get shut down its too much of a risk.

I think its the Dampkring chain that are over 21's.

In my experience a lot of coffeeshop do ask for ID especially in the centre of town. Honestly though on the occasions I have been asked when I said 'yes' I have ID I did not need to produce it and this even worked when I forgotten to bring it. I am 26 but look young I am told.

Since however your 18 year old friend looks about 15 (as I did when I was that age to my annoyance) I expect him to need to produce it and more often. I noticed in all shops anybody that looked very young was asked to produce ID.

As for the 21 thing I dont think it should affect your holiday too much and in general he will be fine if he remembers

to carry his passport. If you find a shop that is over 21s there will be another just across the gracht!!!!

but i guess as long as he keeps his id everything should be all good

the 21-age rule is only for kiddies. if you behave like a kid and are not 21 they will pull you out, if you behave like you should, then no one will throw you out if you`re under 21, thats the experience I made with the Dampkring coffeeshops, until this year I was the only one older than 21, but our group always behaves in the shops, so no problem with taking in some friends who tunred 18 or 19...

seems to vary between 18 and 21. mostly 18 it seems though. always carry a legit state idor passport. iv nearly 25 and i get carded here and there. also make sure its not expired. i got denied with the quickness here in america at a bar the other day because my id was expired.

OK cool, thanks for letting me know. There was 3 of us and we all looked reasonably old for our ages, this is going back 3 years though so I'm not sure if it's tightened up since then.

Presumeably a photographic UK license is sound for proof of age? I know you're meant to always have your passport on you in Amsterdam but I'm not going to carry it unless I absolutely have to, me + drink + weed equals lost stuff, I'd rather the sum of my lost posessions be a couple packs of Rizlas and a pouch of golden V rather than my passport!

Yeah we only ever carry our driving licenses, the coffeeshops that carded the wife were cool with that.

but dampkring's staff are wankers at the best of times tbh

i mean we bought over €100 of smoke and they kicked us out coz we didnt buy drinks

i doubt ill be going back

where was this? it always depends on the dealers you get, thats a rule in every shop, I even had bad ones in my favourite shop Mellow Yellow. At dampkring we usually have very friendly dealers, but I know one guy working there who is a total asshole.....it depends

I dont like the attitutde in Dampkring either, I'll be honest the people I've dealt with at Tweede Kamer were the opposite, really friendly and advised me to hit up Westerstraat for food, I refuse to go to Dampkring Haarlemerstraat as well after getting amazing looking weed but hardly any effects (plus they ruined Pink Floyd).
