Hotel Belga
If you're looking for a clean, family-friendly budget hotel in an excellent location, I can highly recommend the Hotel Belga on Hartenstraat. It's a family business in the beautiful Nine Streets area, surrounded by wonderful little boutiquey shops and cafes, two minutes walk from Dam Square or the A...

Yes it's easy, just go down the escalators and look at the signs for Amsterdam Centraal Station. Get your ticket first though, before going down the escalator. I found the ticket machines confusing at first but they are actually quite easy if you press the Union Jack to get English instructions. I p...

October half term
OK, got back from the Dam 2 days ago and have already booked our next trip, for October. As usual, the main purpose will be to visit Dutch relatives but we love sightseeing there too and I generally manage to slip off to a coffeeshop or two  I'm trying to persuade my brother or sister to join u...

Unless you plan to party 24 hours and get obliterated, it is possible to take the kids along, and still enjoy other elements of the city. Absolutely - my 13 year old daughter has spent lots of time in Amsterdam over her lifetime and there's never been any shortage of places to go and things to see....

I have only been to the RLD a few times in all my visits to Amsterdam over the years. It is sordid and touristy but no worse than some areas of Soho and there are interesting places to visit there. Those times have been mainly to visit the Old Church (has a great World Press Photography exhibition a...

Most of the time when I'm in Amsterdam I'm sight-seeing or eating out with a teenager and other non-smoking family members. I wouldn't have the time or space to roll up but can nip into a coffee shop and pick up a pre-rolled joint (pure of course) for a quiet late-night smoke back at the hotel. In f...

It's great isn't it. It's such a difficult language though. But listening over and over and repeating again and again and it starts to sink in. I can't wait to try out my new phrases.... lots of useful practical information and fascinating cultural facts thrown in too... I hope Laura and Brenno last...

Yay, booked tickets for end of the month
New Year, new plans... yep, have booked a minitrip to the Dam at the end of Jan, just a couple of nights, see our family there and squeeze a bit more value out of the old museum card :D (And maybe drop by a coffeeshop or two   ) Must say it's a good time to go from the UK - got good deals ...
