It's very easy to avoid, I'd say. There's no major tourist attractions there other than the district itself. If you go to the centrum map on this site you'll see from my description that the main RLD is small and concentrated. A person could go to the major museums, Anne Frank House, Leidseplein, Re...

The main RLD is pretty concentrated with 2 separate sections- the Sexyland area near the Old Church and Bulldog coffeeshops and along Oudezijds Achterburgwal and it's sidestreets roughly just West of Nieuwmarkt. A block away from the RLD looks like any other residential area of Amsterdam. For a huge...

The Amsterdam Centraal to Schiphol trains run once per hour from around 1 AM to 5 AM. From 5 AM on there's at least four trains per hour.

I think an exception to the cheap and crappy rule is the Hotel Cornerhouse which is very near Dam Square. Singles run about EUR 26 and doubles about twice that. There's no breakfast though. See: http://www.hotelcornerhouse.nl/indexe.html Also: http://www.amsterdamby.com/cornerhouse/ It's very popula...

Another good resource is the hotel map at channels.nl ...you select the number of stars and a map pops up with the locations. You can use the A to Z button to get web surfer written reviews of the hotels. My favorite is the 2 star Hotel Kap that's located very near the Heineken Brewery on an extreme...

The Globe is indeed in the thick of it which to me is a negative as I'm a very light sleeper although I always bring earplugs. Considering the above I'd rather stay near Leidseplein which at my moderate walking speed is about 25 minutes to the RLD or 30 minutes to CS. A 3 day tram pass is EUR 13 and...

You'll find http://192.148.252.25/~reatta/Menus/ ...very interesting. It's got 30 or more Amsterdam coffeeshop menus. De Dampkring is a good start for lots of info about the individual strains.

Thanks boner for the Grey Area update. I was there a couple of weeks ago and only remember that I was surprised at the prices but I thought it was that they were still 7.50 even though I had read about increases as you report. Must of been a surprise that prices had increased to over 7.50 I was prob...

My buddy who definately deserves a card because of multiple health problems sez that getting a card is not that hard and certain doctors are more helpful in that respect. The local free entertainment/ newsweeklies often have ads from doctors about obtaining a card. If I recall correctly they end up ...
